Fulltime Community Dental Officer (37.5 hours per week). Permanent contract, part time considered

Main duties of the job

Thepost holder will work alongside the Consultants, Specialists and Senior DentalOfficers to deliver dental care to paediatric patients and adult patients withspecial care needs referred into the service.

Thepost holder will be based in clinics based in Rotherham providing high qualitycomprehensive dental care to identified special care priority groups, workingwithin health centres and domiciliary settings. However, where the need arisesthe post holder will be expected to also work in clinics in Barnsley andDoncaster.

Job responsibilities

The Post

The post holder will work alongside other Dental Officers based in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham in providing a range of dental services.

SCOPE AND RANGE

The post holder will be responsible for the provision of a range of dental services in accordance with the commissioned service specification, Trust plan and policies. This may include providing comprehensive dental care under IHS sedation and general anaesthesia. Dental care maybe provided in community, hospital or domiciliary settings as a flexible approach will be required in responding to the clinical care needs of these patients. The post holder will be based at Rotherham Community Health Centre. The post holder may from time to time be expected to work at clinics across the service if the need arises.

MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

To provide high quality oral health care to patients within the remit of the Community Dental Service requiring comprehensive dental care in dental clinics, hospital and domiciliary settings. This will include the treatment of those with learning difficulties, mental health problems and challenging behaviour, complex medical histories, mobility problems, sensory disabilities, frail older people and other special needs. This also includes children with social problems or requiring behavioural management.

Care will be provided in clinics and domiciliary settings which will involve driving between establishments and the transportation of appropriate equipment required for such visits.

To provide preventative care and advice to individual patients and their carers.

Keep comprehensive records and statistical records and complete FP17 forms and statistical returns.

Provision of advice and emergency care to all groups of patients seen within the Community dental service.

Clinical teaching and supervision of Dental Core Trainees placed within the community dental service where appropriate, including assessment of their performance and completion of associated evaluation reports.

KEY INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS

Information Management

Direction and supervision of Dental Care Professionals.

Liaison with hospital and general dental service colleagues and other health and social services staff in order to co-ordinate the patient services provided by the CDS with those of other dental and general health services.

To be aware of and apply Trust policies and procedures within the scope of delegated responsibility.

Display behaviours that demonstrate the Trust Vision and Values.

Carry out such duties as may reasonably be required across the Trust.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

Participation in continuing professional development as required by regulation and personal requirements as highlighted during the development of personal development plan.

To maintain professional knowledge and awareness of current dental issues, especially regarding paediatric and special care dentistry. Continuing postgraduate education will be encouraged and supported, consistent with service needs.

To be involved in assurances of achievement with local and national standards and quality indicators including those within the performance framework of the Care Quality Commission.

POLICY AND SERVICE DEVELOPMENT

Participation in dental audit, clinical governance and Trust and service training events organised for all staff the Trusts mandatory training programme.

These duties may require attendance at any of the Trusts dental clinics and other establishments for the purposes of service provision, in training, staff meetings and maintenance of services during periods of staff absence.

Participate, through the individual development review / appraisal process, in matching organisational aims with personal objectives.

Any other duties that may be delegated by the Clinical Director.

To adapt flexibly to changes which occur in the service and assist in implementing such changes, as agreed with the commissioners.

Take responsibility for identifying risks, and taking action to control them as appropriate to the post.

To work to all policies and procedures in accordance with Trust guidelines including health & safety, patient confidentiality etc.

To take reasonable care for his/her own health and safety and that of other persons who may be affected by his/her acts or omissions. The post holder is also required to cooperate with supervisory and managerial staff to ensure that all relevant statutory regulations, policies, codes of practice and departmental safety procedures are adhered to and to attend mandatory training programmes provided by the employing Trust.
