We are seeking to appoint a dedicated andinnovative qualified Counsellor to work with CYP up to age of 25who may be at risk of disengaging from education, work ortraining. The role will involve working systemically withschools, parents and other agencies across NPT whilst alsoproviding a confidential counselling service to children andyoung people.
You will join a friendly, lively andinnovative School Based Counselling Team who are committed toassisting the LEA in the achievement of increased inclusion andraising educational standards. Committed to the concept ofinclusive education, you will have an understanding of thechallenges facing education in deprived areas and be a passionatesupporter of high expectations and achievement for allpupils.

Neath Port Talbot School Based CounsellingService (NPT SBCS) is a multi-modality team of therapistscomprised of School Based Counsellors, Community Counsellors,Play Therapists and a Drama Therapist. NPT SBCS is committed tohelping Children and Young People (CYP) address emotional andmental health issues so that they may rise through adversity,achieve their potential and lead fulfilling lives. This isachieved through the provision of counselling and child therapyto CYP across NPT. Counsellors and Play Therapists providetargeted therapy to CYP in order to address a range of emotionaland mental health issues. We support schools in this jointendeavour through consultation, support and high-quality in-housetraining which is available to head teachers, school Governors,teaching and non-teaching staff.
This post serves CYP up to the age of 25.The Community Counsellor is one of a number of services availablefor children, young people and families in Neath Port Talbot.
Additionally, the service is passionateabout addressing school staff wellbeing due to the welldocumented link between staff wellbeing and pupil wellbeing,thorough initiatives such as the School Staff Supervision Serviceand School Staff Counselling Service.
As a Community Counsellor, In addition toproviding direct counselling, you will have an important role indelivering group work where needed. You will also run workshopswith groups of children and young people and deliver trainingwhen required. You will play an integral part in developing theSchool Based Counselling Service within the authority, includingcollaborative working with other staff within the InclusionService and taking part in multi-disciplinary consultations withschools. Enhancing the skills of school-based staff will also bean important element of the post.
Your daily routine will include theoffering of one counselling sessions, reaching out and arrangingmeetings with young people and parents, professionalconversations with school staff members and liaising withexternal organisations.
We welcome applications from those who holda Professional Diploma in Counselling and are accredited/registered with the BACP or UKCP or equivalent.
You will have experience of working withchildren and young people.
An understanding of the education systemand the barriers or issues that contribute to children and youngpeople disengaging from school.
Experience of working and liaising withother agencies.
A sound knowledge of appropriate referralsystems for Health and Education within Neath Port Talbot andneighbouring Authorities
Experience of lone working and withincommunity settings
A thorough knowledge of Child Protectionand Safeguarding procedures
