Overview

We are supporting a leading provider of mission critical communications infrastructure that delivers highly resilient networks used by emergency services, healthcare and other essential organisations across the UK. They now have an immediate requirement for a Communications Engineer to join their team in the South.

This is a home‑based role, and the candidate will travel to customer sites across the South of England and will be responsible for maintaining and supporting radio and paging networks, fault finding under pressure and ensuring systems remain operational at all times.

Candidates living in or close to the following locations are of particular interest: Norwich, Bury St Edmunds, Peterborough, Cambridge, Northampton, Oxford, Luton, Chelmsford, Colchester, Dartford, Maidstone, Crawley, Eastbourne, Worthing, Aldershot, Croydon, Reading and Slough.

This is an autonomous role where you will manage your own workload, offering long‑term stability, structured working hours, modern equipment and the opportunity to continue working in a role that genuinely makes a difference. This is ideally suited to individuals from a military communications background who are used to operating in safety critical environments, responding to faults, and maintaining vital systems where reliability is essential.

Communications Engineer Responsibilities
  • Maintain, fault find and repair mission critical radio and paging networks.
  • Attend customer and radio sites for planned maintenance and reactive fault response.
  • Respond to incidents as part of an on‑call rota supporting 24/7 infrastructure.
  • Install, commission and support communications equipment at sites across the South.
  • Carry out work at height including rooftops and tower‑based structures.
  • Maintain accurate site records and engineering documentation.
  • Ensure all work is completed safely and in line with regulatory and operational standards.
  • Work independently in the field while remaining part of a close‑knit engineering team.
Communications Engineer Requirements
  • Hold a minimum of NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in a communications/electronics discipline.
  • Experience maintaining, repairing or operating communications equipment in the field.
  • Strong understanding of radio systems such as VHF and UHF.
  • Familiar with RF principles.
  • Confident working independently at remote or critical sites.
  • Able to work at heights including rooftops and tower‑based structures.
  • Working at height training and certification will be provided.
  • Able to fault find calmly in time‑sensitive situations.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Suitable Background

This role would suit candidates from a military communications or signals background including but not limited to Royal Signals, RAF communications, Royal Navy communications, CIS. Candidates with civilian experience in radio, telecoms or broadcast environments are also encouraged to apply.
