Job summary

National Grid is seeking Commissioning Engineers to join our teams in Carlisle, Newcastle and Murton. The role includes a 24–30 month training programme on-site and in the classroom to gain safety authorisations and technical expertise.

You will work on HV equipment, protection & control systems, and contribute to upgrading the transmission network while supporting energy transition initiatives. A company car, standby rota and paid overtime accompany the starting salary.

Qualifications

  • Min Level 4/HNC in Electrical Engineering.
  • Knowledge of commissioning HV equipment and Protection & Control equipment in an electricity transmission environment.
  • Organised with excellent attention to detail and communication skills; able to supervise on-site or manage delivery of projects.
  • Strong understanding of Safety and Environmental legislation, practices and policies.
  • Hold a current Full UK driving licence.
  • Able to commit to standby rota; live within 45 minutes of base location (Newcastle, Carlisle, Murton).
  • Significant experience in commissioning HV equipment and Protection & Control; ideally senior authorisation.

Responsibilities

  • Commissioning new assets on to the system on a day-to-day basis.
  • Partner with designers and suppliers to modernise assets and develop projects.
  • Lead fault response and ongoing maintenance of the transmission network.
  • Support the transition and implementation of new technologies for the grid (e.g., hydrogen, solar, wind, AI).

We have 2 positions available, 1 at Carlisle CA6 or Newcastle NE21 and 1 at Murton SR7.

  • A starting salary of £55,000 to £68,000 pa, increasing with authorisations + Company Car.
  • Standby Allowance + call out + Paid Overtime + Bonus + paid Training and Development.
  • 37 hours Mon – Fri typically 8am – 4 pm.
  • 26 days annual leave plus 8 statutory days, Contribution Pension scheme max total 18%.

If you are already a SAP and or Commissioning authorised great, if not this role initially is all about training to start with. You’ll join one of our teams, where you will spend the first 24 - 30 months on a training programme gaining experience on-site and, in the classroom, (with short stays away from home) building your skill base and safety authorisations needed to take the next big step.

As a Commissioning Engineer you will continuously strive to improve the transmission network by applying your experience and knowledge of the existing technologies which underpin it, such as, GIS switchgear and future SF6 replacement technology solutions in all their variations, HV equipment such as complex cable systems, transformers and compensation equipment, HVDC systems along with protection and control, but not just existing technologies, it’s also a great opportunity to be part of the transition and implementation of new technologies to transform the grid, such as, hydrogen, solar, wind, AI and digitalisation, in order to play an integral role in the energy transition.

Day to day activities include commissioning new assets on to the system, partnering with designers and suppliers on solutions for modernising our assets, developing new projects. The types of projects you will be involved with are - new build substations, cable extensions and replacements, routine single asset replacement, substation extensions and new customer connections. And don’t forget the existing network requiring maintenance and also leading on fault response when things go wrong.

Must Have's
  • Min Level 4/HNC in Electrical Engineering.
  • You have knowledge of commissioning HV equipment, Protection & Control Equipment in an Electricity Transmission environment and technically proficient in power systems theory.
  • You’ll be organised with excellent attention to detail and communication skills, can demonstrate experience of site supervisory or management and delivery of projects.
  • Have an excellent understanding of Safety and Environmental legislation, practices and policies,
  • Hold a current Full UK driving licence.
  • Can commit to a standby rota for emergency call outs, due to this you will need to live within 45 minutes commute of your approved base location. Newcastle NE21, Carlisle CA6, Murton SR7
  • You have significant experience in commissioning HV equipment, Protection & Control Equipment and technically proficient in power systems theory, ideally you will have held a senior authorisation.
