Job description

Commissioning Engineer - 6-Month Contract

Location: Various Client Sites / UK Travel
Contract: 6 months initially
Rate: £35–£45 per hour, depending on experience
Type: Contractor

We are seeking an experienced Commissioning Engineer to support projects across a range of client sites on an initial 6-month contract.

This is a highly practical, site-based role focused on commissioning, snagging, fault finding and resolving outstanding engineering issues.

The successful contractor will be responsible for working through commissioning requirements, identifying problems, understanding why they have occurred and coordinating with the appropriate engineers, contractors or suppliers to get them resolved.

This role would suit a practical engineer with a strong mechanical and electrical understanding, particularly someone who has worked in a commissioning, maintenance, engineering or process environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Attend client sites to support commissioning and project completion activities.
  • Work systematically through commissioning check sheets, punch lists and snagging schedules.
  • Tick-box and close out outstanding commissioning and engineering requirements.
  • Identify faults, issues and incomplete works across mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Investigate problems to establish what is wrong, where the issue is, why it has occurred and what is required to resolve it.
  • Determine whether an issue sits with mechanical, electrical, controls, process, installation or another discipline.
  • Coordinate with the appropriate engineer, contractor, supplier or specialist to resolve identified issues.
  • Follow up outstanding actions and ensure issues are properly closed out.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, process diagrams and technical documentation.
  • Understand the wider process and how individual pieces of equipment interact within a system.
  • Carry out basic mechanical and electrical fault finding where appropriate.
  • Support functional testing and commissioning of plant and equipment.
  • Identify safety, quality or operational issues and elevate them appropriately.
  • Liaise with client representatives, site teams, contractors and third-party suppliers.
  • Provide clear updates on commissioning progress and outstanding issues.
  • Ensure completed works are properly documented and signed off.
  • Attend multiple client sites depending on project requirements.
Ideal Background

We are open to candidates from a range of engineering and process environments, including:

  • Food & Beverage / Food Processing
  • Pharmaceutical
  • Water / Wastewater
  • Chemical / Process Engineering
  • Industrial manufacturing
  • Process plant
  • Engineering maintenance
  • Mechanical & electrical maintenance
  • Commissioning and installation

Candidates coming from a maintenance engineering background could be particularly well suited, provided they have strong fault-finding skills and the ability to understand wider process systems.

Essential Experience
  • Previous experience in commissioning, maintenance, engineering or site-based project work.
  • Strong practical fault-finding and problem-solving ability.
  • Good mechanical engineering knowledge.
  • Good electrical awareness and the ability to understand electrical systems and identify when specialist electrical support is required.
  • Ability to read and understand P&IDs, engineering drawings and process documentation.
  • Understanding of industrial/process equipment and how systems operate together.
  • Experience working through structured check sheets, punch lists and snagging lists.
  • Strong communication skills and confidence dealing with clients, contractors and engineers.
  • Ability to work independently on site and use initiative when identifying problems.Comfortable travelling to different client sites.
Desirable Experience
  • Previous commissioning experience within food, beverage, pharmaceutical, water or chemical environments.
  • Electrical or mechanical engineering qualification/background.
  • Experience with process plant and equipment.
  • Experience working with pumps, vessels, pipework, valves, conveyors, motors and associated process equipment.
  • Experience working alongside controls, automation or instrumentation engineers.
  • Experience with installation, maintenance or project completion.
  • Previous experience managing snagging and punch-list activities through to completion.
The Person

We are looking for a practical, hands-on engineer who knows how to find problems and get them resolved.

This isn't simply a role where you will be expected to follow a checklist. You need to be able to look at an issue and ask:

What is wrong? Where is the problem? Why has it happened? Who needs to resolve it? What is required to close it out?

You will need to be confident enough to investigate issues yourself, while also knowing when a problem needs to be escalated to an electrical, controls, mechanical, process or specialist engineer.

The ideal candidate will have a strong practical engineering mindset, good mechanical and electrical understanding, and the ability to understand the overall process rather than focusing solely on an individual piece of equipment.

Contract Details
  • Initial 6-month contract
  • £35–£45 per hour, depending on experience
  • Site-based role with travel to various client locations
  • Commissioning, snagging and fault-finding focused
  • Mechanical & electrical engineering environment
  • Candidates from food & beverage, pharmaceutical, water, chemical, process or maintenance backgrounds encouraged to apply
  • Potential for further contract opportunities depending on project requirements
