About the role

At Balfour Beatty , we don't just build projects, we deliver the infrastructure that powers
communities, businesses, and entire industries. Our Power Transmission & Distribution
team is shaping some of the most unprecedented and complex projects in the UK energy sector, and we're looking for a Commercial Manager who's ready to match that ambition.

Our HVDC portfolio is growing with the recent success on both Lot 1 & Lot 2 of National Grid's £59 billion High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Framework. The first tender under the new frameworks will cover southern civil works for Eastern Green Links 3 and 4. This position is to be part of Lot 2 - HVDC Onshore Cable Civils.

This isn't a role for someone who wants to coast. We're after a professional with sharp
commercial acumen, fire in their belly, and the drive to get things done to the highest standard.

You'll be stepping into a high-performing team where the bar is set high, the pace is fast, and the rewards are real.

Can be based from Derby, with travel to site (3 days onsite in York/Hull)

What you'll be doing
  • Leading the commercial delivery of major power sector projects, ensuring outcomes that are profitable, sustainable, and aligned with client expectations.
  • Driving commercial strategy, managing risk, and ensuring strong governance across complex contracts.
  • Coaching and developing your team, raising the standard at every level
  • Building trusted relationships with clients, stakeholders, and partners through
    transparency, integrity, and delivery.
  • Provides commercial input to Value Engineering reviews for different forms of
    construction.
  • To manage the preparation of Target Cost for a Project, including the associated risks.
  • To support the review of tenders, including estimates, cost data and contract reviews.
  • Manage the preparation of the monthly CVR and associated commercial reports.
  • To be able to report and explain the commercial progress to senior project staff.
  • Establish client supply chain requirements & advise on alternative forms of contract & procurement arrangements.
  • Co-ordination of buying, accounts, production control/planning, supply chain
management & procurement techniques, estimating & surveying functions
Who we're looking for
  • A proven track record as a Commercial Manager (or a Managing Quantity Surveyor ready to step up) with significant experience in large-scale infrastructure, energy, or power projects.
  • The full suite of professional QS skills and qualifications - but more importantly, the ability to apply them in real-world, high-pressure environments.
  • Demonstration of Strategic Change Management.
  • FIDIC contract experience desirable, but not essential.
  • A results-driven mindset: someone who thrives on challenges, makes clear decisions, and refuses to settle for "good enough."
  • Track record of managing and developing a commercial team and be themselves a Chartered Member or Fellow of the RICS, ICES or CIOB, and a mentor/role model to other commercial staff on their journey to becoming professionally qualified.
  • Strong alignment with Balfour Beatty's values - Lean, Expert, Trusted, Safe - and the ability to bring these to life daily in how you lead, deliver, and inspire others.
