Location: Braco Substation, Cambushinnie, Perthshire

Company: Balfour Beatty Scotland

Project: Cambushinnie 400kV Substation New Build

Shape the Commercial Success of a Nationally Significant Energy Project

Balfour Beatty is looking for an experienced Commercial Manager to provide commercial leadership on the new Cambushinnie 400kV Substation project near Braco.

This is an opportunity to take a key role on the Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment programme, supporting the upgrade and expansion of Scotland’s electricity transmission network and helping connect renewable energy generated in the north of Scotland with areas of demand across the country.

You will join a fast-moving, high-value infrastructure project involving complex civil engineering packages, multiple work fronts and significant commercial responsibility.

About The Project

The proposed Cambushinnie 400kV Substation will be constructed immediately west of the existing Braco West 275kV Substation.

The project forms part of the wider upgrade of the Beauly–Denny overhead line from 275kV to 400kV and will provide the enhanced switching capability required to support Scotland’s growing renewable energy network.

The Project Includes
  • Haul road and access-track construction
  • Major earthworks, cut-and-fill operations and formation works
  • Heavy groundworks, drainage and utilities installation
  • Substation platform construction
  • Foundations and reinforced concrete structures
  • Design and construction of a new control building

The Opportunity

As Commercial Manager, you will lead the commercial and contractual management of the civil engineering supply‑chain packages across the project.

Working closely with the project, engineering, construction and framework delivery teams, you will develop and implement commercial strategies, manage subcontractors, forecast financial performance and ensure strong contractual governance across all work packages.

You will play an important role in protecting project margins, managing risk and ensuring that commercial information is accurate, clear and delivered on time.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the commercial and contractual management of the Cambushinnie 400kV Substation civils packages.
  • Develop commercial strategies aligned with project objectives, contractual requirements and target margins.
  • Manage cost reporting, forecasting, valuations and cost-to-complete assessments.
  • Identify, price, submit and agree variations in accordance with contract requirements.
  • Maintain accurate commercial records to support change management and potential claims.
  • Lead subcontract procurement, tendering, negotiation and contract administration.
  • Ensure subcontract accounts are managed effectively and in line with contractual terms and conditions.
  • Monitor project cash flow and support the submission of accurate and timely payment applications.
  • Work closely with project teams to support progress reviews, reporting and risk management.
  • Ensure compliance with Balfour Beatty commercial governance, health and safety standards and business management systems.
  • Use BIM information, where applicable, to support measurement, valuation and commercial reporting.
Who we're looking for

You will be a proactive and commercially astute professional who is comfortable managing complex civil engineering packages within a fast‑paced project environment.

You will be confident working alongside operational and technical teams, managing changing priorities and providing clear commercial direction.

Essential Experience
  • Strong commercial experience within substations, utilities, energy, transmission or major civil engineering infrastructure.
  • Experience managing earthworks, groundworks, drainage, platforms and multi‑discipline civils packages.
  • Good working knowledge of NEC contracts, or similar forms of contract, supported by a strong understanding of contract law.
