Overview

An exciting opportunity is available for an individual with an accounting or legal qualification to join our Specialist Orthopaedic NHS Foundation Trust in this new role. The role will be key to the development and delivery of our commercial strategy, ensuring that the Trust's commercial activities comply with legal, regulatory and governance requirements and providing leadership to a newly formed commercial team. Role available on a 12-18 month secondment or fixed term contract.

Responsibilities
  • Play a central role in the leadership and future success of the organisation, advising the Trust Executive and Senior Management Teams on all aspects of commercial activity.
  • Oversee Commercial Contracts, Not for Profit contractual arrangements, wholly or partially owned subsidiaries, joint ventures or similar third party arrangements, areas covered by the commercial strategy, and Intellectual Property.
  • Develop and implement the commercial strategy; build and lead the commercial team and governance framework.
  • Manage contracts and partnerships; advise on commercial risks and opportunities; represent the Trust regionally and nationally as required.
  • Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory standards; collaborate with internal and external stakeholders; promote innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Deputise for the Chief Finance & Commercial Officer as required.
  • Contribute to establishing Trust-wide standards to maintain, monitor and improve the quality of total care and the efficient use of resources to promote patient satisfaction, experience and outcomes.
  • Set, own and lead the delivery of the Trust's commercial strategic objectives and plans; develop corporate core purpose, vision, mission and values.
  • Work with the Chief Financial Officer to agree operational and personal objectives and performance targets aligned with the corporate strategy and business plans.
  • Develop effective working relationships with key external stakeholders including commissioners and other local healthcare providers; contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Lead the development of commercial skills among Trust colleagues, including management of a commercial teaching/training function; promote a culture of performance and value for money.
  • Ensure effective resource management within the allocated budget and explore income streams from commissions, grants and national schemes, including partnerships.
  • Provide expert commercial advice for future partnership arrangements; develop high-profile business cases to secure internal and external funding.
  • Develop business plans with Trust Directors and Executives; lead the development of business cases for commercial developments and a sustainable pipeline of opportunities.
  • Appraise forecast outcomes of commercial proposals and report to the board, stakeholders and regulators as appropriate.
  • Establish close working relationships with research and innovation services, education directorates and ICB to maximise commercial opportunities; manage commercial and contractual agreements with stakeholders to ensure value for money and delivery of contractual requirements.
  • Maintain relationships with external advisers and networks to develop opportunities for patients and staff across clinical networks, procurement collaboratives and other health care providers.
  • Contribute to a culture of equal opportunities, diversity and inclusion; promote patient-first values and a sustainable future for financial targets.
Qualifications
  • Masters level education with a relevant professional qualification (e.g., CIPS) and significant management experience in a commercial or finance role.
  • Strong experience in negotiating and managing commercial contracts and delivering complex commercial strategy and transactions.
