Job summary

AWE plc is seeking a Commercial Capability Manager in Reading, Berkshire. The role focuses on developing a comprehensive capability framework with training, mentoring, and development programs to close skill gaps across Commercial functions.

You will partner with department heads to tailor development plans, manage training resources and budgets, and align with HR and talent teams to support employee growth.

Working Pattern

AWE operates a 9-day working fortnight, with every other Friday as a non-working day. This role is eligible for hybrid working, meaning employees typically spend three days onsite in a long week and two days onsite in a short week. As the Commercial Capability Manager, your primary responsibility is to develop and embed a full capability framework covering competencies, training, development, and mentoring. You will need to identify and evaluate skill gaps within Commercial and implement training programmes to bridge those gaps. You will work closely with department heads to understand the specific knowledge and expertise required for each role and develop tailored development plans. This role will report into the Senior Capability Manager.


Key Accountabilities

  • Managing and fostering effective relationships with external governing bodies (MOD, DNO, CAB) and identifying opportunities for collaboration across government commercial skills and development.
  • Defining the Commercial competency framework and career pathways.
  • Managing Commercial training plans and working with Commercial training providers to ensure maximum utilization of AWE training resources.
  • Collaborating with wider AWE HR and talent teams to align with employee development processes, tools, and procedures.
  • Managing the Commercial skills and development programme and budget.
  • Understanding capability development demand and market trends to define requirements for best-in-class capability development.
  • Analyzing skills gaps and developing plans to address them across Commercial.
  • Rolling out a Commercial mentoring programme to nurture internal talent.

Candidate Requirements

  • Proven professional experience.
  • Experience in a Procurement / Commercial function.
