Overview
In the UK, Safran Seats specialises solely in the First Class and Business Class seating markets for wide body aircraft, with industrial and engineering teams in Cwmbran and Newport, Wales and Brackley, England.
Role purpose
The purpose of this role is CNC programming using a variety of CAD packages to create CNC programs to support production across multiple manufacturing departments. The role supports production through the NPI process to ensure a robust, repeatable manufacturing process that meets customer standards and cost expectations. It also supports continuous improvement activities at shop floor and pre-production design levels, and may require on‑the‑floor support while maintaining a high standard of 5S+1 and adherence to health and safety standards.
Key responsibilities
- Working within a small team of offline programmers creating CNC programs to support production.
- Using solid models to create CNC programs using a number of CAD packages.
- Collaborating with design and engineering teams to ensure design data is fit for production.
- Reporting issues or constraints to Lead CNC Programmer.
- Supporting the programming team through cross-functional training where needed.
- Working with internal and external support functions including manufacturing engineers, design engineers, CNC setters and production operators.
- Promoting and participating in improvement activities as required.
- Creating right first time CNC programs from model data using CAD/CAM software to support production.
- Creating setter documents using Microsoft Excel and Word to aid setting and operating production machinery.
- Raising tooling and material requirements with manufacturing engineering to support production.
- Maintaining and updating program libraries and records in line with company standards.
- Designing JFTs, jigs and fixtures to aid manufacturing.
- Supporting manufacturing and design engineers through product design reviews.
- Supporting production with machining method issues and geometry queries.
- Supporting the programming team through cross-functional training in line with the department training matrix requirements.
- Supporting production with setting and operating of production machinery as needed in line with business needs.
- Supporting the business in other areas outside day-to-day activities in line with business requirements.
- Implementing and maintaining a safe environment for employees and raising Health & Safety concerns to management in compliance with the Company Health & Safety procedure.
Qualifications and experience
- Minimum NVQ Level 2+3 Mechanical Engineering
- Minimum B-Tec National Diploma Mechanical Engineering
- Basic knowledge of CATIA V4 / V5
- Time served / experience using CAD/CAM software packages:
- Edgecam
- MasterCam
- Cimatron
- Radan
- Trumpf TruTops
- Time served / experience in a production environment:
- Sheet metal
- Mchine shop 3/4 axis machines
- Vac Form CNC Routing
- Composite CNC Routing
- Engineering / mechanical background
- Conversant with engineering documents and drawings
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- High attention to detail
- Able to build strong working relationships
- Positive can-do attitude
- Ability to work without supervision in a multi-functional team
