Job description

The key role of the Vascular Scientist is to work independently performing, interpreting and reporting a range of highly specialised diagnostic investigations including Doppler blood flow analysis for Vascular Surgery and other specialities within the UCHW and surrounding hospitals.

The post holder will participate in research, trials and clinical audit, train junior members of staff, assist with managerial duties directed by the head of department and contribute towards departmental commitments for training external staff. The post holder will provide scientific, technical and clinical advice and service to other sites served by the department.

The post holder is required to plan own workload, organise projects and prioritise requests; adapt schedules in response to unpredictable urgent requests; discuss highly complex aspects of patient treatment/outcome with medical staff, scientists, nurses and the head of department.

Responsibilities
  • Independently perform, by means of a Colour Doppler Ultrasound Unit and other specialised equipment, a comprehensive range of highly specialised diagnostic duplex ultrasound scans, including carotid, upper and lower limb arterial duplex scans and intracranial cerebral blood flow measurements and temporal scans on patients.
  • Perform non-imaging investigations such as invasive and non-invasive physiological pressure measurements.
  • Undertake intra-operative and immediate post-operative transcranial monitoring, alerting the vascular surgeons of critical adverse events.
  • Adjust and tailor the scope of the investigation depending on the patient’s symptoms and/or pathology found during the course of the investigation.
  • Discuss complex technical issues with medical and other staff, advising clinicians of any limitations that may affect the accuracy of the requested investigation and recommend alternative diagnostic imaging techniques or modalities where appropriate.
  • Clearly communicate the nature of, and reasons for, the investigation to the patient.

  • Participate in clinical and scientific research and medical trials.
  • Contribute towards the training of junior staff including trainees, scientists, technologists and other staff from both within the Trust and externally.
  • Assist with scheduling patient appointments, adapting work plans in response to urgent requests or extended procedures influencing operating theatre times.
  • Be actively involved in the development of departmental policies and procedures, implementing strategies that impact work both within and outside the department.
Requirements
  • Previous applicants need not apply.
  • Successful applicants must provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.
