Job description

The Senior Health Care Support Worker (SHCSW) will function at a higher competency level than that of other Health Care Support Workers (HCSW) with responsibility for actively participating as part of the Multi‑Disciplinary Team within the Emergency Department, to provide a seamless service to patients and relatives.

The SHCSW will work under proximate supervision from a Registered Practitioner and carry out assigned clinical tasks involving direct patient care and associated administrative duties.

The delivery of clinical and therapeutic care, within the clinical setting according to established protocols and within the scope of the SHCSW, under the guidance and supervision of the Registered Practitioner.

Organise and prioritise time and work activities effectively.

Contribute to the delivery of nursing care ensuring the highest possible standard under the supervision of Registered Practitioners, undertake a range of delegated clinical care duties, record patients’ observations, and collect specimens and samples as instructed.

Under supervision and appropriate delegation from the Registered Practitioner assess patients’ conditions through basic test results and clinical observations.

Ensure care is documented accurately and in a timely manner as per Trust policy and contribute to updating patients’ records.

Ensure that patients and relatives are treated with courtesy at all times, that the individual needs of patients are respected, and that the rights, responsibilities and diversity of people are promoted and valued. Patients must be treated with privacy and dignity.

Maintain a safe working environment, reporting incidents, accidents and complaints, and understand the need to maintain and respect patient confidentiality.

Promote and participate in Health Education.

Maintain confidentiality of all patients and work‑related issues.

Actively participate in Departmental Team Development and Nursing Team Development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in the welcoming and reception of patients in the clinical area, supporting the assessment process and liaising with the Emergency Department Registered Practitioner.
  • Participate in the delivery of care in conjunction with the Emergency Department Registered Practitioner, ensuring assistance is provided with patients' activities of daily living.
  • Assist in creating an environment that meets the needs of patients, relatives and carers.
  • Escort/support relatives within the department and to the Mortuary.
  • Have the skills, knowledge and competency to perform the following clinical skills:
    • Vital signs and early warning score
    • Urinalysis
    • Pregnancy testing
    • Capillary blood glucose monitoring
    • ECG acquisition
    • Venepuncture
    • Peripheral IV access
    • Urinary catheterisation
    • Basic limb casting
    • Pressure area risk assessment
    • Wound closure
  • Ensure adequate skills to maintain/update patients’ computer records.
  • Evaluate, analyse and act upon findings that directly relate to the provision of Emergency Care.
  • Ensure the Registered Practitioner is aware of any conditional changes that may affect patient acuity.
  • Recognise colleagues’ workload and provide support as necessary.
  • Act as a mentor to junior staff.
