Job Summary
The Imaging Physics & Radiation Protection group within Christie Medical Physics & Engineering are seeking a Clinical Scientist to join our growing team of ~30 scientists, technologists and administrators. We deliver scientific support to NHS and independent sector clinical radiology departments in the North West of England.
Candidates should have scientific and interpersonal skills. Good communication and proactive team working is essential. The role involves supporting radiology departments with regulatory compliance, operating and testing x-ray equipment, quality assurance and audit, project and development work, continual personal learning and developing others.

Main duties of the job
- Provide radiation protection advice to diagnostic and interventional radiology/cardiology departments and dental practitioners as part of the CMPE RPA body (recognised by the Health and Safety Executive under IRR17).
- Lead in the performance and safety assessment of X-ray equipment and provide Medical Physics Expert support for diagnostic radiology departments, including patient dosimetry, dose optimization and image quality, digital imaging, CT, interventional and cardiac imaging, mammography, bone densitometry and equipment calibrations.
- Teach small groups and occasionally present to larger audiences on radiation protection or diagnostic radiology physics topics.
- Experience of medical physics support to diagnostic radiology is essential; HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist is required or eligible. If a suitable registered Clinical Scientist is not available, we will employ STPs or a route 2 trainee approaching the end of training. Candidates without registration may be appointed at a lower band.

Job responsibilities
- Management: Plan own varied workload to meet deadlines; contribute to planning and development of the Group’s services; participate in the Quality Management System and implement policies.
- Specialist areas: Lead the development of services in areas such as patient dosimetry, dose optimization, image quality, digital imaging, CT, interventional and cardiac imaging, mammography, bone densitometry, equipment calibrations and method development; identify and undertake R&D projects and develop protocols and work instructions; provide scientific advice to users.
- Scientific support to diagnostic radiology: Provide scientific advice on local quality control and review QC results; perform commissioning tests and QC measurements on X-ray equipment, prepare written reports, and liaise with manufacturers as needed.
- Radiation protection: Provide medical physics expert support to NHS and independent sector establishments; optimise patient dose and image quality; advise on non-ionising radiation; assess doses and risks in routine and research procedures.
- Research, teaching and training: Deliver physics teaching for FRCR and radiation protection courses; assist in training and supervision of trainees; undertake R&D and present results at appropriate meetings.
- Professional: Stay up to date with developments; maintain CPD and registration; comply with training requirements; participate in outreach; manage long periods of concentration across multiple workstreams.
Person Specification
Essential
- Qualifications: Honours degree in physical science; MSc or equivalent in Medical Physics; DipIPEM or equivalent (e.g. STP); HCPC registered or eligible as a Clinical Scientist.
- Experience: Highly specialist medical physics support to Diagnostic Radiology (incl. UV & lasers).
- Skills: Excellent English communication, strong interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and in a team, precise test tool positioning, data analysis, problem solving, resilience.
Desirable
- Membership of IPEM or equivalent; progress toward Medical Physics Expert or Radiation Protection Adviser; teaching/training and research experience; supervision of trainees; experience in radiotherapy imaging and protection.
Other
- Valid driving licence; willingness to work flexibly; able to lift heavy equipment (up to 15 kg); enthusiasm and commitment.
