Job description

Building on our track record of delivering pioneering research we are working in collaboration with Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, University of Cambridge and the Cancer Research UK (CRUK) Queen Mary University of London Cancer Prevention Trials Unit (CPTU) to deliver a clinical trial into the early detection of oesophageal cancer – the BEST4 Screening Study. This exciting project, funded by CRUK and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), aims to determine whether the Capsule Sponge test can be used for early diagnosis of cancer of the oesophagus and reduce deaths. You will be responsible for managing clinics on the BEST4 mobile unit and will be trained to administer the Capsule Sponge test. You will work alongside established clinical teams, researchers, research nurses and administrators to facilitate recruitment, sample collection, data entry and provide clinical support as required. Your work will involve traveling to various sites and liaising closely with the clinic coordinator and the clinical research team to meet study objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Manage the clinic on the BEST4 mobile unit.
  • Promote and nurture a welcoming, professional and pleasant environment for all participants.
  • Provide and receive complex information when explaining study involvement and obtaining informed consent.
  • Complete the BEST4 participant screening visit as per study protocol.
  • Confirm participants are safe and able to take part in the study; complete informed consent prior to the Capsule Sponge test.
  • Administer the Capsule Sponge test to participants.
  • Work autonomously to manage a caseload of participants while collaborating with the wider BEST4 research team.
  • Perform required clinical skills to care for participants during their study visit (e.g., emergency practices).
  • Take appropriate action in emergencies (detachment, bleeding, resuscitation or anaphylactic reaction) in accordance with local policy and procedures.
  • Ensure mandatory training is kept up to date according to local policies and requirements.
  • Collaborate with the BEST4 clinical coordinator to address re‑training needs for Capsule Sponge test administration.
  • Input and record data onto the electronic Case Report Form (eCRF) and other research databases with a high degree of accuracy and in accordance with ICH GCP.
  • Collect, verify and enter study data accurately, complying with ICH GCP, national directives and research governance policies.
  • Identify potential barriers to recruitment and help implement action plans.
  • Maintain effective communication with the study team, BEST4 research nurses and study participants, and attend relevant meetings.
  • Liaise with study personnel at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, University of Cambridge, CPTU and EMS Healthcare as necessary.
  • Drive the BEST4 mobile units to the different research sites as per the study schedule.
  • Work closely with the Clinical Coordinator, Clinical Research Team and Project Managers at QMUL, Cambridge and EMS to ensure study objectives are met.
Required Qualifications
  • Registered nurse (NMC Registration)
  • Continued CPD
  • Previous research experience or upper gastrointestinal experience
  • Significant post‑registration clinical experience
  • Experience performing nurse‑led clinics
  • Good understanding of clinical research
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal/written)
  • Ability to work accurately and methodically with excellent attention to detail
  • Team player with ability to work independently and on own initiative
  • High level of organisational and time‑management skills
  • Excellent IT knowledge / skills and proficiency in MS Office software
  • Full, clean UK driving licence
  • Willingness to travel and complete overnight stays as required
  • Motivated and enthusiastic
Desirable Qualifications
  • Degree in a related subject area
  • ICH GCP training
  • Knowledge of research regulations at national level
  • Prior experience in cancer research and endoscopy
  • Prior experience working with the Capsule Sponge device
