Job description
Clinical Research Fellow in Respiratory & Sleep Medicine

This is an exciting opportunity for a fellow with an interest in sleep ventilation and respiratory medicine to work with key investigators in carrying out new research studies.

The post holder will be able to support the design and conduct of the research with the key investigators. They will also be expected to analyse data, take part in research meetings and prepare manuscripts arising from the research. The post holder will also support the overall oversight of the conduct of a multisite UK trial with trial Sponsor.

Main duties of the job

To set up and deliver the randomised controlled trial (RCT) to investigate the use of transcutaneous electrical stimulation in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (TESLA-MICRON; NIHR funded) under the supervision of the principal / chief investigator.

Lane Fox Respiratory Service is situated in St Thomas' Hospital and is a specialist commissioned respiratory service to support both the acute and long‑term management of patients with sleep disordered breathing and chronic respiratory failure. Currently, there are approximately 2500 patients managed in the Lane Fox Respiratory Service. With 34 beds and a purpose‑built outpatient facility, Lane Fox is the largest weaning, rehabilitation and home ventilation service in the UK with a South East HMV network being developed to facilitate ease of access for all patients with chronic respiratory failure. The research service is housed in the Lane Fox Clinical Respiratory Physiology Centre and the translational science programme is focused on three themes of admission prevention in COPD, prevention of skeletal muscle wasting during critical illness and clinical trials to improve long‑term outcome in patients with sleep disordered breathing and chronic respiratory failure. The Lane Fox Respiratory Service ensures life‑long support for patients throughout the cycle of their condition.

Job responsibilities
  • Screening and recruitment of potentially eligible patients in respiratory/sleep medicine
  • Consent and enrolment of participants
  • Support of randomisation process
  • Support, follow‑up and clinical assessment of enrolled study participants according to the study protocol
  • Liaison with R&D team and collaborators
  • Collection and quantitative/qualitative analysis of study data and maintenance of database
  • Preparation of study documents, R&D and ethics applications and approvals, study materials and reports
  • Working with key stakeholders, including sponsor (Zeus), funder (NIHR), and patients/public (PPIE)
  • Overseeing trial management at other sites and troubleshooting
  • Preparation of documentation required by sponsor, funder, MHRA, REC and R&D
  • Presentation and dissemination of results and progress/findings via multiple media, including conference presentation (abstracts) and research manuscript publication(s)
  • Clinical trial management and conduct according to GCP principles
  • Attend trial steering committee (TSC) and data monitoring committee (DMC) meetings and site visits (UK wide)
  • Document case report forms (CRFs) and adverse events (AE)
  • Adhere to GCP and HTA guidelines at all times
  • Work with R&D, REC and HRA to ensure appropriate authorisations are in place to proceed with the research
  • Participate in clinical and other service activities for high standard of patient care
  • Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training
Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) or equivalent
Clinical Experience
  • Experience of managing patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA)
  • Experience in CPAP / non-CPAP therapies
  • Expertise in sleep medicine (e.g., somnologist, ESRS exams)
Knowledge and Skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including confident and comfortable interaction with trial participants, clinical and research team members, and the broader research community
  • Fluent use of IT including email, MS Word / MS Excel processing, spreadsheet, database, other library and statistical software packages
Research Skills
  • Understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research
  • Previous study setup and experience with REC/R&D
Other
  • Evidence of understanding of the role of clinical management
  • Evidence of contribution to effective clinical audit and clinical risk management
