Job description

The role involves applying psychological expertise to reduce the risk of harm and re‑offending for prisoners, people on probation and staff. It is a non‑operational, non‑rotational position with line‑management responsibilities and offers hybrid working options.

Responsibilities
  • Offer authoritative professional advice on targets, objectives and placement of offenders.
  • Provide professional opinion to teams preparing prison life‑er, parole and other reports.
  • Develop strategy and plans for programme assessment and manage assessment/interviews for offenders with indeterminate sentences.
  • Provide consultancy support to senior management and other teams on psychology services and outcomes.
  • Conduct research, data gathering and analysis to inform practice.
  • Supervise trainee forensic psychology staff and deliver training, mentoring and support to trainee psychologists and other staff.
  • Ensure staff development aligns with key competencies and gate‑ways and that policies and procedures are applied consistently.
  • Lead risk assessment and risk management of offenders, including self‑harm assessments.
  • Deliver or oversee the quality of complex treatment programmes.
  • Provide consultancy on specialist areas such as Sexual Offending Strategy or Indeterminate Sentenced Prisoner Strategy.
  • Act as negotiation adviser where appropriate.
  • Serve as a professional witness in parole board hearings, multi‑agency meetings and court proceedings.
  • Maintain continued professional development and HCPC registration (or progress towards registration within six months of offer).
  • Facilitate hybrid working arrangements that meet business needs and are negotiated with the successful candidate.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Qualified forensic or clinical psychologist with HCPC registration, or in the process of obtaining registration.
  • Evidence of experience providing clinical supervision and training.
  • Completed relevant training in effective treatment models and best practice.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in written and spoken English (Welsh skills where required).
  • Statement of suitability and evidence of progression towards HCPC registration in the application.

Working Conditions & Benefits

• 37 hours a week, excluding unpaid breaks.
