Job summary

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board seeks an experienced clinical psychologist to work with children, adolescents and adults with complex trauma. You will provide specialist psychological assessments, formulation and intervention across Phoenix Psychology contracts, drawing on approaches such as ACT, TF-CBT, EMDR and DDP.

You will travel across the region to collaborate with statutory and third sector organisations, provide supervision and training, support service development and research,

Job description

You will ideally have experience of working with children, adolescents and/or adults with complex trauma, with these needs potentially being expressed through a range of challenges, from an adopted child struggling to emotionally regulate themselves, to an adult with a chronic physical condition having to navigate lifelong health complications and services therein, to those engaging with or at risk of serious youth violence. You must have a good understanding of trauma, its impact and associated models of psychological intervention. The work will be varied and can be complex and challenging. Our small and friendly team support each other, and like everyone at Phoenix, we bring passion, commitment, and integrity to our work. The post will be working across a range of contracts many of which require working directly in, alongside and in partnership with a range of statutory and third sector organisations which does mean willingness to travel across the region is essential.

• To provide qualified psychology input to children, families, adults and services across Phoenix Psychology contracts - working with complexity and trauma.
• To provide specialist psychological assessment, formulation and intervention to individuals, family groups and / or professional networks, with a focus on relevant approaches (e.g. ACT, CFT, TF-CBT, EMDR, DDP, SFT).
• To offer specialist trauma focused assessments for individuals with complex presentations.
• To offer advice and consultation on psychological care to non-psychologist colleagues and to other, non professional carers.
• To offer specialised training, consultation and developmental opportunities to professional and non professional audiences.
• To utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research within services provided by Phoenix Psychology.

The post will be working across a range of contracts some of which require working directly in, alongside and in partnership with a range of statutory and third sector organisations therefore we are looking for someone who will be invested in carrying out meaningful work to genuinely support our community; someone driven to develop psychological mindedness in organisations to enable them to support themselves and their clients; someone able to plan, put together and carry out bespoke packages of work and see them through to their conclusion.

1. 1. To provide specialist psychological assessments referred to the team based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources including psychological and neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with individuals, family members and others involved in their care.
2. 2. To formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological intervention and/or management of an individuals needs, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of their problems, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy, across the full range of settings.
3. 3. To be responsible for implementing a range of psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families and groups, within and across teams employed individually and in synthesis, adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.
4. 4. To evaluate and make decisions about treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family or group.
5. 5. To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for all aspects of case management including assessment, intervention and endings alongside ethical and transparent recording of information and communication with all relevant stakeholders.
6. 6. To provide specialist psychological advice guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to an individuals formulation and intervention plan.
7. 7. To contribute directly and indirectly to a psychologically based framework of understanding and care to the benefit of all individuals within the service, across all settings and agencies serving the client group, including Court proceedings.
8. 8. To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and to provide advice to other professions on psychological aspects of risk assessment and management.
9. 9. To communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner, information concerning the assessment, formulation and intervention plans of individuals under your care and to monitor progress during any involvement.
10. 10. To ensure that all services provided are acceptable and accessible to the individual, carers, family members and professionals of diverse community backgrounds and non discriminatory in nature.
11. 11. To promote equality, respond to diversity and practice in ways that encourage self-reflection / do not discriminate or lead to other forms of unfair treatment.

Teaching, training, and supervision

1. 1. To receive regular clinical professional supervision from a principle / consultant clinical psychologist and, where appropriate, other senior professional colleagues.
2. 2. To gain additional highly specialist experience and skills relevant to clinical psychology and/or the service as agreed with the Director.
3. 3. To provide advice, consultation and training to staff working with individuals, carers and their families across a range of agencies and settings, where appropriate.

Service development

1. 1. To contribute to the development, evaluation and monitoring of the teams operation and provision of services, through the deployment of professional skills in research, service evaluation and audit.
2. 2. To advise both your supervisor and Director on those aspects of the service where psychological and/or organisational matters need addressing.
3. 3. To support the principle / consultant clinical psychologist in establishing new protocols and procedures as changing service demands require.

Research and service evaluation

1. 1. To utilise theory, evidence-based literature and research to support evidence based practice in all areas of work.
2. 2. To undertake appropriate research and provide research advice to other professionals as required.
3. 3. To undertake project management, including complex audit and service evaluation, with colleagues within the service to help develop service provision as required.

Information Management

• 1. To input and maintain, appropriate computer and manual information systems, complying with all organisational, data protection and information management requirements.
