Main duties of the job

As a Clinical Lead, your main duties will centre on leadership and the delivery of high‑quality care. You will be responsible for assessing complex patient needs, developing comprehensive care plans, and providing specialist clinical interventions. A key part of your role will be to offer supervision and professional guidance to junior nursing staff, fostering a supportive and effective team environment. You will also act as a pivotal link within the multi‑disciplinary team, collaborating closely with prison staff, psychologists, and other health professionals to ensure seamless, integrated care for all patients. Maintaining the highest standards of clinical governance and safety within the secure environment is fundamental to this role.

Job responsibilities

We are looking for a dedicated Clinical Lead to join our mental health team at HMP Low Newton. This role goes beyond nursing; it offers an opportunity to make a profound difference where your expertise is needed most. You will provide clinical leadership, oversee complex caseloads, and drive high‑quality, evidence‑based care.   • Clinical Leadership: Providing day‑to‑day clinical leadership and expertise to the nursing team, ensuring the delivery of high‑standard, evidence‑based care.
  • Patient Care Management: Assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care for a designated caseload of patients with complex mental health needs and/or learning disabilities.
  • Supervision & Support: Providing clinical supervision, mentorship, and line management to junior staff members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development.
  • Multi‑Disciplinary Working: Acting as a key member of the multi‑disciplinary team (MDT), collaborating with prison staff, psychologists, psychiatrists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure integrated patient care.
  • Governance & Safety: Upholding the highest standards of clinical governance, risk management and professional practice within a secure environment, in line with Trust policies and NMC guidelines.
  • Service Development: Contributing to the ongoing development and evaluation of the service, participating in audit and quality improvement initiatives.
Person Specification

The ideal candidate will bring the following:

  • Registered Nurse (RNLD or RMN) with a valid NMC pin.
  • Substantial post‑registration experience in a mental health or learning disability setting.
  • Proven experience in a leadership or senior clinical role, demonstrating the ability to supervise and support others.
  • Excellent knowledge of mental health legislation, risk assessment and care planning.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • The ability to work effectively under pressure within a complex and secure environment.
  • A current, active Prison Clearance is an essential requirement for this post.
  • Experience working within a forensic or secure setting.
  • Post‑registration qualifications relevant to the role (e.g. in leadership, forensics or CBT).
