Job description
Clinical Lead - Urgent Care Department (Mental Health)

Basildon Hospital – Full Time (24h a day, 7 days a week based on rostered shift pattern).

The Mental Health Urgent Care Department is a purpose‑built facility located at the Basildon Mental Health Unit, Basildon university Hospital site, providing urgent biopsychosocial assessment and immediate care planning to adults aged 18+ experiencing a mental health crisis.

Role Overview

The Clinical Lead is responsible for senior clinical leadership, day‑to‑day coordination, and managerial input to ensure effective delivery of urgent mental health care across the service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and inspire a multidisciplinary team (support workers, peer coaches, social workers, nurses, doctors) to deliver high quality urgent care.
  • Provide clinical leadership in assessment, monitoring, and management of patients, ensuring evidence‑based care and alignment with NICE and DH guidance.
  • Develop and improve service pathways, policies and best practice in collaboration with senior colleagues and operational managers.
  • Ensure statutory compliance, meet KPIs and performance targets, and drive quality improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain strong links with local agencies (ward teams, crisis teams, emergency services, local authorities, voluntary sectors) and communicate service information to staff and partners.
  • Monitor referrals, waiting times, workload, and capacity, reporting performance issues.
  • Provide specialist advice and support to staff, participate in the Trust's patient safety incident response plan, and conduct investigations into complaints.
  • Manage human resource issues including sickness absence and conduct and capabilities, in line with Trust policies.
  • Ensure implementation and compliance with Trust policies, procedures, and health and safety regulations.
  • Participate in clinical governance activities, conduct audits, and promote service user involvement.
  • Co‑lead patient review processes, attend specialist meetings, and advise on complex referrals.
  • Any other duties delegated by the Care unit leadership team.
Person Specification
Knowledge / Education / Qualifications (Essential)
  • Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) with current registration.
  • Evidence of continuing professional and personal development.
Desirable
  • Non‑Medical prescribing qualification.
Experience (Essential)
  • Substantial experience as a mental health practitioner at Band 6 or above.
  • Experience supervising junior staff.
Desirable
  • Experience working in a community setting.
