Job summary

Basildon Hospital's Paediatric Department invites applications for a Clinical Fellow (ST2) in Paediatrics on a fixed-term 12-month maternity cover (Jan 2027–Feb 2028). The post offers exposure to acute and general paediatrics, working with consultants, trainees and Foundation doctors to deliver high-quality children's care.

Qualifications

• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification and GMC registration are essential.
• MRCPCH part 1 or equivalent Paediatric postgraduate qualification is desirable.
• APLS/EPLS/NLS is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Provide assessment, diagnosis and ongoing management of children and young people across the Children’s Ward, Paediatric Assessment Unit and Paediatric Emergency Department, including emergency and resuscitation scenarios.
• Deliver care within the Neonatal Unit, including the Level 2 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Labour Ward and Postnatal Ward.
• Undertake newborn resuscitation and initial management of common neonatal conditions with senior supervision.
• Assess and manage paediatric patients in outpatient clinics under supervision of a Consultant Paediatrician.
• Participate in the department's teaching programme and provide education to junior staff and medical students.
• Engage in simulation training, SLEs, departmental meetings, audits and quality improvement activities.

The Paediatric Department at Basildon Hospital, Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, is seeking enthusiastic Clinical Fellows (ST2 level) to join our team on a full-time, fixed-term basis to cover a 12-month maternity leave period (January 2027 to February 2028).

Working alongside a dedicated team of consultants, specialty trainees, Foundation Year doctors and GP trainees, you will gain broad exposure to both acute and general paediatrics while delivering high-quality care to children and their families. Your clinical duties will be undertaken under the supervision of experienced consultants who hold overall responsibility for patient care.

Main duties of the job

• Provide assessment, diagnosis and ongoing management of children and young people across the Children's Ward, Paediatric Assessment Unit and Paediatric Emergency Department, including participation in emergency and resuscitation scenarios.
• Deliver care within the Neonatal Unit, including the Level 2 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Labour Ward and Postnatal Ward, supporting the stabilisation and management of premature and unwell newborn infants.
• Undertake newborn resuscitation and initial management of common neonatal conditions with appropriate senior support and supervision.
• Assess and manage paediatric patients in outpatient clinics under the supervision and guidance of a Consultant Paediatrician.
• Participate actively in the department's teaching programme, providing education and support to junior doctors, medical students and nursing staff through bedside teaching and formal presentations.
• Engage in simulation training, supervised learning events (SLEs), departmental meetings, clinical audit and quality improvement activities to support professional development and service excellence.
• Contribute to the assessment and management of safeguarding concerns, working closely with Consultant colleagues and multidisciplinary teams to ensure the safety and wellbeing of children and young people.
• Work collaboratively with Consultants, Middle Grade Doctors, Nurses, Community Teams and other multidisciplinary colleagues.
