Overview

A Vacancy at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Applications are invited for Clinical Fellow posts in Neurocritical Care (Intensive Care) at The National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London, for a 6-month period that can be extended to a year or more, subject to satisfactory appraisal. Three posts are available, commencing 4 February 2026. The successful applicants will work under consultant supervision at a level matched to their learning needs and experience.

Interviews are scheduled via Microsoft Teams on 10 November 2025.

The posts are suitable for individuals wishing to experience intensive care medicine in a nurturing environment with a view to applying for core training in intensive care medicine, emergency medicine, acute medicine, neurology or neurosurgery. Although based in a neurosciences intensive care unit, many principles of intensive care medicine apply to a general ICU. The posts are also suitable for those seeking further neurocritical care experience for specialist training.

Responsibilities
  • Share the responsibility for the assessment, resuscitation and treatment of all patients referred to the Critical Care Unit, working as part of a team with the on-call ICU consultant.
  • Work alongside trainees on a full shift rota and be resident in the hospital during working hours allocated to the rota.
  • Share responsibility for direct clinical supervision and teaching of trainee staff, nurses and medical students.
  • Assist in the provision and development of a safe, effective and efficient critical care service and support the Trust in its aim to provide the best possible care to patients.
  • Carry out all duties to a high standard and take responsibility for individual patients in their care.
  • Comply with Trust Health and Safety policies and infection control principles to maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.
  • Maintain good electronic clinical records and effective working relationships with medical, nursing and allied healthcare professionals on the critical care team.
  • Take an active role in departmental clinical governance activity.
Qualifications
  • Applicants must be eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.
  • Non-UK trained doctors must be on the GMC register by date of appointment and have completed both PLAB1 and PLAB2.
  • This post is full-time and is covered by the Medical and Dental Staff Terms and Conditions of Service.
About the Unit and Training

The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery provides neurological and neurosurgical services on a regional, national and international basis. The neuroscience critical care unit is a 28-bed unit with approximately 850–950 admissions a year, including 35–40% planned elective admissions. We care for neurology, acute stroke and neurosurgical patients in one of the largest dedicated neurocritical care facilities in the UK. There is senior support 24/7 for the unit, with two daily ward rounds by ICU consultants and a dedicated anaesthetic registrar for airway management, line placement and other out-of-hours intensive care issues. Opportunities exist to engage in teaching, MDT simulation sessions, clinical governance and quality improvement projects to strengthen portfolios for training posts, as well as developing technical skills in Intensive Care Medicine. The successful applicant will join a team of 17 doctors, including HEE trainees from various specialties, Clinical Fellows, CESR ICM fellows and senior neuroanaesthesia fellows as part of an EWTD compliant full shift rota. This post is remunerated as a locally employed doctor in line with the 2016 terms and conditions of service.

Education and Meetings
  • Weekly MDT neurocritical care meetings with neurologists, neurosurgeons, clinical psychologists and AHPs.
  • Monthly M&M meetings to discuss interesting learning cases, decisions and ethical dilemmas.
  • Formal weekly educational programme including consultant/senior delivered teaching, journal club, bedside teaching, tea trolley teaching, in situ MDT simulation and a CVC simulation course for junior fellows.
  • Some consultants are POCUS accredited and can mentor FUSIC heart, lung and transcranial ultrasound.
  • You will be allocated an Educational Supervisor to enable regular appraisal and support in developing a learning plan and portfolio.
