Job description
Overview

This is an exciting opportunity to build on existing experience in paediatric stem cell transplant and leukaemia. We are seeking an enthusiastic individual with appropriate training to join our dedicated team. This is new post based at the Leeds Children's Hospital at the Leeds General Infirmary in the heart of the city. Specialty Doctors are an integral part of our Paediatric Haematology and Oncology Department. Some of our Specialty Doctors have been with us for over ten years, while others have used the experience gained through working in the post as a stepping stone to a consultant post. The emphasis of the role is the in‑patient and out‑patient care of paediatric haematology patients, especially those undergoing stem cell transplantation for leukaemia and haemoglobinopathy.

Main duties of the job
  • Do ward rounds on the stem cell transplant unit and of other paediatric haematology patients as needed.
  • See patients attending acutely to the day unit.
  • Participate in clinics for stem cell transplant patients, leukaemia patients and for those with non‑malignant conditions in the children’s haematology and oncology day unit.
  • Support the stem cell transplant team with administrative tasks.
  • Share responsibility for the general anaesthetic lists carrying out haematological procedures (typically lumbar punctures and bone marrow examinations).
  • Participate in a weekend daytime service to the paediatric oncology department. One weekend in 4‑5 involves review of all the in‑patients and acute presentations to the wards from 0830‑2100 on Saturdays and Sundays.
