Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Stem Cell Transplant

Thisis an exciting opportunity to build on existing experience in paediatric stemcell transplant and leukaemia. We areseeking an enthusiastic individual with appropriate training to join ourdedicated team. This is new post based at the Leeds Childrens Hospital atthe Leeds General Infirmary in the heart of the city. Specialty Doctors arean integral part of our Paediatric Haematology and Oncology Department. Some of our Specialty Doctors have beenwith us for over ten years, while others have used the experience gainedthrough working in the post as a stepping stone to a consultant post. Theemphasis of the role is the in-patient and out-patient care of patientspaediatric haematology patients, especially those undergoing stem celltransplantation for leukaemia and haemoglobinopathy.

Main duties of the job

DUTIESOF THE POST

  • Do ward rounds on the stem celltransplant unit and of other paediatric haematology patients as needed
  • See patients attending acutely tothe day unit
  • Participate in clinics for stemcell transplant patients, leukaemia patients and for those with non malignantconditions in the childrens haematology and oncology day unit
  • Support the stem cell transplantteam with administrative tasks
  • Share responsibility for the general anaesthetic lists carrying out haematological procedures (typically lumbar punctures and bone marrow examinations)
  • Participate in a weekend daytimeservice to the paediatric oncology department. This will be one weekend in 4-5 andinvolves review of all the inpatients and acute presentations to the wardsfrom 0830-2100 on Saturdays and Sundays.

Thepost holder is required to be fully registered with the General MedicalCouncil (GMC) and hold a licence to practice.

Standardsof Conduct and Behaviour

Youare required to work to the standards set out by the General Medical Councilin Good Medical Practice. Thisincludes protecting patients when you believe that a doctors or othercolleagues conduct, performance or health is a threat to them. If, after establishing the facts, it isnecessary, you must follow the Trusts procedures in this matter and informyour Clinical Director or Medical Director in the first instance.

LeaveArrangements

Allleave should be applied for in accordance with the Trusts Leave Policy,normally giving six weeks notice of any leave, other than in exceptionalcircumstances.

Training

Thejobholder must take responsibility in agreement with his/her line manager forhis/her own personal development by ensuring that Continuous ProfessionalDevelopment remains a priority. Thejobholder will undertake all mandatory training required for the role.

Clinical Experience and Career Progression
  • Experience in paediatric oncology and haematology at HST level is required.
  • Four years experience after full GMC registration or equivalent, and evidence of achievement of foundation competences, in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice
  • Evidence of working at a higher specialist training level and competencies in paediatric oncology and haematology
Clinical, Academic, and Personal Skills
  • Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems
Qualifications
  • MRCP/MRCPCH or equivalent
Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills
  • Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at intended start date
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent
  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely and is aware of own training needs.
  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
