Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, engaged and committed individual to work in Newcastle Hospitals Trust. This post is designed for those interested in Colorectal Surgery at the Freeman Hospital.

The trainee will have completed foundation training and will have passed Part A MRCS. The role provides experience with elective and emergency care, with a 1:7 on‑call commitment and 1:10 night on‑call. It is intended for individuals seeking experience equivalent to ST1–2 level, offering opportunities to develop core skills.

The post is to commence ASAP and continue until 4 August 2026.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in elective care of patients within the firm, including ward, theatre and outpatient clinics.
  • Deliver emergency day and nighttime cover.
  • Assist in the care of all allocated patients under the direct supervision of the consultant.
  • Provide cross‑cover for all patients in the unit when required.
  • Engage in business, post‑take and teaching ward rounds, OP clinics, operating theatre sessions, and administrative tasks (dictation of summaries, letters, coding, etc.).
  • Attend operating theatre lists regularly and perform supervised surgical procedures appropriate to the trainee’s level.
  • Participate in weekly educational meetings such as Directorate, Audit/M&M, MDT, and departmental meetings, as well as the regional SPR teaching programme and core trainee/foundation doctor surgical teaching programme.
  • Engage in research and audit projects, presenting findings at regional, national and international meetings.
  • Contribute to the Junior Doctor educational support structure, delivering informal support to medical students and other junior doctors.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Full GMC registration at the time of application.
  • Completed foundation training and passed MRCS Part A.
  • Previous paid NHS experience is essential; clinical access or observership placements do not count.
  • Paid NHS experience required for consideration; we will only shortlist those meeting this criterion.
Working Conditions

The on‑call roster is 1:7 daytime and 1:10 night; the post is EWTD compliant and operates under the new deal pay band (to be confirmed upon offer). Out‑of‑hours commitment focuses on day‑time cover.
