Job description

Our aim is to support you to progress in a career in intensive care medicine or to gain experience in dealing with critically ill patient regardless of your chosen specialty. You will be allocated an educational supervisor who will act as advisor and mentor.

You will gain experience in managing critically unwell patients, performing line insertions, bronchoscopy, tracheostomy, drain insertion, organising transfer of level 2 and 3 patients to CT, MRI, interventional radiology and theatre. The role offers the opportunity to learn ultrasound and echo skills. Additionally, you will be encouraged to develop non‑clinical skills and your portfolio by participating in audit, quality improvement projects, teaching, education and research.

Essential Criteria
  • MBChB or equivalent.
  • GMC Registration with licence to practice.
  • PLAB 1 and 2 for overseas applicants.
  • Fluency in English for overseas applicants (IELTS).
  • Completion of Foundation training programme.
  • Minimum of 2 years working as a doctor after full qualification (excluding clinical attachments).
  • Current UK professional registration.
Desirable Criteria
  • FRCA, FFICM or equivalent postgraduate qualifications.
  • Postgraduate qualifications or diplomas in anaesthesia, intensive care medicine or related specialties.
  • Completion of Core Training in Anaesthesia or Intensive Care Medicine.
  • Core training in related specialties such as Acute or Emergency Medicine.
  • Experience in Intensive Care (excluding clinical attachments) and Advanced Life Support.
  • Relevant procedural skills for intensive care medicine.
  • Understanding of audit and quality improvement.
  • Completed projects that are relevant to critical care.
  • Research experience in critical care.
  • Evidence of previous research experience, publications or formal teaching.
  • Formal training or a diploma in postgraduate education.
  • Presentations at national or international meetings.
Research
  • The unit is actively involved in several research studies coordinated by our Research Lead, Professor Welters.
  • Participation will be tailored to your interests and experience.
