Job description
Overview

As a Clinical Endoscopist (CE), you will receive training in upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, ultimately responsible for identifying, diagnosing, and treating patients. You will work with the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to develop, manage, and deliver high‑quality general and specialist upper and lower GI endoscopy services. You will undertake diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopies, provide conscious sedation, IV interventions, and comprehensive post‑procedure care. Your role will include prescribing medication, monitoring therapeutic outcomes, and actively seeking peer review to advance clinical practice.

Clinical Responsibilities
  • Practice autonomously and be self‑directed.
  • Assess individuals using a range of assessment methods including physical examination, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests.
  • Determine evidence‑based therapeutic interventions, prescribe medication, and monitor effectiveness.
  • Participate in peer review and define the boundaries of practice.
  • Lead to ensure delivery of a high‑quality, patient‑centred service across endoscopy units.
  • Remove polyps independently and identify abnormalities, acting according to protocols.
  • Provide conscious sedation in line with national and local guidelines.
  • Provide advice to patients and promote lifestyle changes.
  • Complete an electronic report for every procedure, ensuring follow‑up care.
  • Plan and prioritise workload and liaise with administrative teams.
  • Liaise with multi‑disciplinary teams regarding patient management.
  • Promote and demonstrate the benefits of the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.
  • Use advanced communication skills to promote a positive working environment, impart significant news, and implement change.
Clinical Governance
  • Maintain and evaluate standards of care.
  • Ensure compliance for ongoing accreditation by the Joint Advisory Group (JAG) on endoscopy.
  • Safeguard the welfare and safety of staff, patients, and visitors in accordance with Trust Health and Safety Policy.
  • Attend mandatory lectures, courses, and training sessions.
  • Participate in research and clinical audit in line with Trust policies.
  • Contribute to development of protocols and guidelines based on evidence‑based practice.
  • Identify strategies for increasing user involvement.
  • Work closely with departmental staff to identify risk reduction strategies.
  • Report hazards, unsafe practices, and incidents in accordance with procedures.
Education and Training
  • Act as a role model and mentor to all staff, providing informal and formal teaching.
  • Facilitate study days for healthcare professionals.
  • Promote health education locally and nationally (e.g., Bowel Cancer Awareness).
  • Maintain educational needs by attending courses, conferences, and mandatory training.
  • Maintain Nursing and Midwifery Council requirements and expert clinical nursing standards.
  • Write and promote educational leaflets for patients and staff.
Clinical Management
  • Plan and prioritise workload with high visibility to patients and staff.
  • Promote safe practice in line with professional scope.
  • Collaborate with the Endoscopy Sister, Matron, Bowel Cancer Screening team, Consultants, and others to develop new services and initiatives.
  • Participate in future planning, development, and funding of initiatives.
  • Attend administrative and management meetings as invited.
Staff Management & Development
  • Participate in management, supervision, and development of Clinical Endoscopists in training.
  • Support medical and nursing colleagues to achieve high standards of clinical practice.
  • Provide clinical role modelling, support, and professional guidance to colleagues.
Personal Development
  • Maintain a professional attitude, developing the role of the CE in the best interest of patients and the profession.
  • Attend courses and conferences to stay up‑to‑date with research and practice changes.
  • Promote safe practice and act as a patient advocate.
  • Critically evaluate current practices and initiate change as appropriate.
Service Development & Improvement
  • Assist with service development and implementation of policies for the non‑medical endoscopy service.
  • Develop and maintain protocols, care pathways, and guidelines based on evidence‑based research.
  • Assist with audit to assess compliance with JAG regulations.
  • Collaborate with national groups to implement national guidelines and improve services.
  • Promote and coordinate nursing research within endoscopy.
Knowledge, Training and Experience
  • Demonstrate advanced theoretical and practical clinical knowledge for the role.
  • Demonstrate highly developed physical skills in flexible upper and lower GI endoscopy.
  • Show competency in IV cannulation, drug administration, and medication supply under the PGD framework.
  • Know the Global Rating Scale (GRS) and JAG accreditation standards.
  • Contribute to the Corporate Nursing Strategy of the Trust.
Additional Responsibilities

As a role model you will teach, audit, and research within the specialty, working independently with authority. You will support the team in vetting referrals for the 2‑week wait pathway and validating surveillance patient lists.

Application Invitation

We invite applications for the Trainee Clinical Endoscopist. Applicants should ideally be educated or working towards a Masters level, with extensive endoscopy experience, and able to demonstrate technical and non‑technical skills in list management, decision making under pressure, and care coordination. The Trust has purpose‑built units with bespoke decontamination areas, two theatre suites at CGH and three at GRH, with expansion plans. Endoscopy lists also take place at Stroud and Cirencester Hospitals, requiring travel to all sites.

Post starts at Band 7, including a bespoke training programme with Health Education England (HEE) for 18 months to 2 years (30‑week upper GI programme progressing to a 40‑week colonoscopy programme) and a non‑medical prescribing course. Upon completion, you will be eligible to undertake the full remit of the role and be appointed substantively at Band 8a. If you leave within two years of appointment to Band 8a, you will be liable to repay associated costs.
