We are seeking an experienced and visionary Clinical Director - Children and Young Persons (CYP) to provide strategic and operational leadership across a growing portfolio of CYP mental health services.

This is a pivotal senior leadership role with responsibility for ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, high-quality, and patient-centred care for children and young people. Working closely with the Medical Director and wider clinical and operational leadership teams, you will provide strong clinical leadership, ensuring that governance, safeguarding, quality, and performance standards are consistently achieved.

You will play a key role in the continued development and transformation of CYP services, supporting innovation, service improvement, workforce development, and sustainable growth. This role offers the opportunity to influence clinical strategy while helping shape services that meet the evolving needs of children, young people, and their families.

The position is home-based, with occasional travel required for leadership meetings and organisational events across the UK. Applicants must reside in the UK.

Key Responsibilities

As the Clinical Director - Children and Young Persons, you will:

  • Provide strategic clinical leadership and oversight across CYP services, ensuring safe, effective, and high-quality care.
  • Ensure services meet clinical governance, quality, safeguarding, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Chair and contribute to clinical quality and safety meetings, driving performance improvement and organisational learning.
  • Lead and support Clinical Leads, overseeing performance, professional development, resource management, and clinical concerns.
  • Collaborate with clinical and operational leaders to design responsive, effective, and sustainable CYP pathways and workforce models.
  • Lead service transformation initiatives focused on improving patient experience, clinical outcomes, capacity, and efficiency.
  • Maintain a strong focus on safeguarding, ensuring children, young people, and families remain at the centre of clinical decision-making.
  • Support the recruitment, induction, development, and retention of medical and multidisciplinary clinical professionals.
  • Foster a culture of multidisciplinary collaboration, evidence-based practice, innovation, and clinical excellence.
  • Work with senior leaders and external stakeholders to shape clinical strategy, policies, standards, and future service development.
About You

You will be a strategic, compassionate, and experienced clinical leader with substantial expertise in children and young people's mental health services.

You will possess a strong understanding of the clinical, safeguarding, and operational challenges involved in delivering high-quality CYP services, alongside the leadership skills required to drive organisational improvement and service excellence.

You will be an effective communicator capable of engaging a broad range of stakeholders, including clinicians, senior leaders, external partners, and, where appropriate, the media. Strong influencing, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills are essential, as is the ability to lead through change, manage complexity, and respond confidently to emerging challenges.

The successful candidate will demonstrate high levels of professional integrity, sound clinical judgement, and the ability to balance patient safety, clinical quality, operational priorities, and organisational objectives. You will also have a proven ability to coach, mentor, and develop future clinical leaders.

Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience
  • Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) and a relevant postgraduate qualification (MRCPsych or equivalent).
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise and inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register.
  • Significant senior clinical and strategic leadership experience within mental health services or a similarly complex healthcare environment.
  • Extensive experience working clinically with children and young people, with a strong understanding of CYP service delivery and operational requirements.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of safeguarding, clinical risk management, clinical governance, and quality improvement methodologies.
  • Strong understanding of NHS services, healthcare regulation, and the wider healthcare landscape.
What's on Offer
  • Remote, flexible working.
  • Competitive salary package of up to £175,000 FTE.
  • £1,000 annual home-working allowance.
  • Additional earning potential of up to £100,000 per annum through clinical assessment work.
  • Opportunity to shape and influence the future of CYP mental health service delivery.
