Job summary

A health foundation trust in Gateshead is seeking an enthusiastic Clinical or Counselling Psychologist for a permanent role. The successful candidate will provide psychological services for adults with physical health challenges, working within multidisciplinary teams. Applicants should have doctoral-level training, be eligible for chartered status, and possess requisite skills for assessment and intervention. This position offers an annual salary of £47,810 to £54,710 pro rata.

Clinical/Counselling Psychologist

We wish to recruit an enthusiastic Clinical or Counselling Psychologist to join the Clinical Health Psychology Service in Gateshead for a permanent 0.8WTE band 7 role.

The post holder will provide direct and indirect psychological services to adults with physical health difficulties who are referred to the Gateshead Clinical Health Psychology Service from specialities within General Medicine.

The successful candidate will have a firm grasp of the local and national guidance in relation to psychological need in the management of those with acute and chronic physical health conditions and possess the skills and experience needed to deliver both direct and indirect services from within an acute healthcare setting, including working with multidisciplinary teams.

They will be capable of integrating knowledge from these to contribute to the development and delivery of psychological services for people with long term health conditions.

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Clinical Health Psychology Service based in Gateshead, which offers a high standard of professional and managerial support.

The post holder will work alongside senior psychologists and other clinicians providing psychological services to a range of specialities within Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust including General Medicine, Pain Management, Cancer Care and paediatric Diabetes services.

We have good links with other psychology services within Gateshead, with local Clinical and Counselling Psychology courses and there are many opportunities for co-working, teaching, supervision, and research.

Person Specification
Education and Qualification
  • Doctoral level training in Clinical or Counselling Psychology, through a course accredited by the British Psychological Society.
  • Eligibility for the Chartered Clinical Psychologist or Chartered Counselling Psychologist status
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council (H.P.C.)
  • Willing to undertake a further planned programme of intensive training/experience in line with service need.
Knowledge and Experience
  • Experience of specialised psychological assessment and treatment of clients across a range of care settings.
  • Experience in providing consultancy and training.
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life span.
  • Experience with presenting problems at the more complex end of clinical severity, involving highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
Skills and Competencies
  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management, frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
  • Well developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, of complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
  • Experience of providing consultation to other professional groups and voluntary services.
  • Ability to teach and train others, utilising a variety of approaches including didactic and experiential methods with small and large groups
