Job description

To undertake the role of a Clinical Coder to clinical groups or specialties as appropriate, abstracting from patient notes and other information sources and assigning suitable codes onto the Trust’s patient administration system in line with National standards. Attend training sessions as necessary and work to maintain allocated reference manuals and standards manuals so that they are always up to date with national guidance.

We are recruiting and Band 4 Clinical Coders who have completed the NHS Clinical Coding Foundation Course.

Please note that only the Band 4 role is subject to the R&R Premium (subject to renewal in December 2026). This will be applied upon commencement of the role. This will be included in the salary package from the start of employment.

  • Abstract all the necessary information relating to inpatient activity including diagnoses and surgical procedures from both the case notes and the Trust’s electronic systems and input this into the patient administration system in a timely manner, ensuring coding deadlines are met.
  • Translate clinical information into appropriate codes from various sources, adhering to national and local coding rules and conventions.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to developing coding expertise, working alone and correctly prioritising clinical codes, attending in house workshops and external courses as advised.
  • Maintain and improve personal knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
  • Keep up to date with coding rules and conventions and pass yearly clinical coding audit.
  • Raise information queries with responsible clinicians.
  • Raise coding queries with appropriate senior staff to ensure consistency and quality of clinical coding data.
  • Respond promptly and positively to requests for coding information from internal and or external information requests.
  • Support and motivate junior members of staff in the department.
