Building Control Surveyor (Class 2 - Interim Contract)

Location: Greater Manchester (Hybrid / Local Authority)

Rate: £65 per hour (Umbrella)

Contract: Initial 6-Month Assignment

Hours: 37 hours per week

About the Role

An excellent interim opportunity has arisen for an experienced Building Control Surveyor (Class 2) to join a progressive local authority in the Greater Manchester region. You'll play a key role in ensuring building safety, compliance and quality across a diverse portfolio of projects - from complex commercial developments to residential schemes. Working within a supportive Building Control team, you'll be responsible for plan checking, site inspections and enforcement work, ensuring statutory duties are met under the Building Act and Building Regulations. This is a hands‑on, professional role suited to a surveyor who enjoys autonomy, technical challenge and a collaborative working environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess and determine Building Regulation applications, including complex and high‑value schemes.
  • Undertake site inspections at key stages to ensure compliance with approved plans and relevant legislation.
  • Provide expert technical advice to developers, architects, and homeowners, ensuring safe and compliant design and construction.
  • Investigate and support enforcement actions for unauthorised or non‑compliant works.
  • Assist with the management of dangerous structures and emergency call‑outs as required.
  • Maintain accurate digital records, inspection notes and decision logs.
  • Promote sustainability, accessibility, and fire safety across all projects.
  • Stay up to date with changes to Building Regulations, technical standards and Building Safety Regulator requirements.
About You

You’ll be an accomplished Building Control professional with sound technical judgement, a practical approach to risk management and strong customer service skills. You’ll combine professional confidence with the ability to work collaboratively within a modern, outcomes‑driven local authority team.

Essential Skills and Experience
  • Proven experience delivering Building Control services within a local authority or approved inspector environment.
  • Strong knowledge of the Building Regulations, Approved Documents and related legislation.
  • Confidence inspecting a range of building types, including complex and higher‑risk projects.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills with a customer‑focused approach.
  • Ability to manage workload independently, balancing plan assessments, inspections and reporting.
  • Competent use of digital Building Control systems and mobile inspection tools.
Qualifications
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Building Control, Building Surveying, or Construction.
  • Registered Building Inspector (Class 2) with the Building Safety Regulator.
  • Chartered membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. CABE, RICS, CIOB) preferred.
  • Evidence of ongoing CPD and professional development.
