Claims Officer – HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS)

Salary: £25,582

Working Pattern: Full Time – Part Time – Part Time/Job Share

Location: Bristol Magistrates' Court and Tribunals Hearing Centre, Marlborough Street, Bristol, BS1 3NU

HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) administers criminal, civil and family courts and tribunals in England and Wales. We are looking for individuals who are committed to public service and want to make a difference.

About The Role

The Claims Officer is responsible for receiving, processing, and progressing judicial fees, expenses, witness and appellant costs claims for payment, and responding to claimant queries via letter, email or telephone.

Responsibilities
  • Receive and process fee and expenses claims arising from courts and tribunals.
  • Check and approve or reject claims, ensuring validity, accuracy and policy compliance.
  • Approve first‑line claims and prepare monthly payrolls.
  • Take action on claims to ensure timely and accurate payment.
  • Reject incorrect claims, advise claimants and refer non‑compliance to the team leader.
  • Respond to enquiries from HMCTS staff, judicial office holders and other customers, or redirect appropriately.
  • Work as part of a team to manage workload efficiently and maintain consistent service standards.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve processes and team activities.
Essential Person Specification
  • Adaptable and willing to work in a culture of change, continually improving products, processes and priorities to meet current and future needs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent IT skills, particularly Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong analytical skills for investigating and resolving complex issues.
