Overview
A rewarding opportunity has arisen to join our Claims Department as a full time Small Animal Claims Consultant. Reporting to the Head of Claims, you will play a vital role in supporting veterinary professionals when they face allegations or claims of professional negligence and/or misconduct. At the Veterinary Defence Society (VDS), our mission is to support, protect and advocate for our members with integrity, fairness and compassion. As a Claims Consultant, you will deliver this core service through a blend of veterinary insight, analytical thinking, and empathetic communication.
Responsibilities
- Manage and resolve claims made by members under their professional indemnity policies.
- Investigate allegations of professional negligence or misconduct with fairness and professionalism.
- Liaise with members, claimants, legal representatives, and experts to reach balanced, evidence-based outcomes.
- Provide guidance and reassurance to members, often during stressful and complex situations.
- Attend Claims Group meetings, case conferences, court hearings, and regulatory interviews as required.
- Contribute to the mentoring and development of Claims Advisers and colleagues within the Claims Group.
- Support the Technical Services Manager in delivering the Society\'s advice services.
- Represent VDS at CPD and professional events, sharing learning and promoting awareness.
- Maintain accurate and timely case records, ensuring a consistent and transparent approach across the team.
Qualifications
- Veterinary degree (BVSc or equivalent) and MRCVS membership.
- Current and relevant clinical experience in small animal practice.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex matters clearly and sensitively.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail.
- Confidence in decision-making and negotiation.
- Awareness of current issues and structures within the veterinary profession.
- Willingness to develop knowledge of legal, insurance and regulatory processes (legal qualification not required).
- Postgraduate veterinary qualification (certificate or diploma).
- Experience in complaint management, practice leadership, or veterinary associations.
- Public speaking or presentation experience.
