Job summary

Haskoning seeks a Senior Project/ Civil Engineer to join the Maritime team in Lerwick, Shetland. You will design and deliver maritime civil structures for ports and shipyards, using steel, concrete and timber, guiding projects from inception through construction and beyond.

You will work with multi-disciplinary teams, provide technical and commercial input, and help grow our UK maritime client base with proposals and value-driven solutions. Relocation support available.

Qualifications

  • Degree in civil/structural engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Maritime structures experience is desirable but not essential.
  • Strong communication and client-facing approach.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare designs and analyses for maritime structures from concept to detailed designs.
  • Carry out design data collection and coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Perform inspections and surveys; check calculations and produce design calculations.
  • Produce CAD drawings and Revits details and review these prior to issue.
  • Draft Bills of Quantities, contract documents and specifications.
  • Prepare reports and presentations for stakeholders.
  • Conduct structural analyses using hand calculations, Excel and FEM tools.
  • Provide engineering judgment and contribute to study reports.

About Our Lerwick Team

Arch Henderson, established in 1919, have recently merged with Haskoning and have integrated into the Water & Maritime Business Unit of Haskoning to create a Maritime Arch Henderson Advisory Group with offices in Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow, Lerwick and Thurso. The Lerwick team comprises expert Maritime, Civil and Structural Engineers, Project Managers and Engineering Technicians delivering a wide range of maritime and other related projects across the Northern Isles. You would be joining a well-established team that is looking to develop as we embark on this next chapter.

The Role

The role will require you to use your technical and practical experience to develop engineering design solutions for maritime civil engineering structures in ports and shipyards, using steel, concrete, timber, and other materials to relevant design codes.

You will have engineering input in all project stages from inception, through design and construction, to demolition, recycling, and reuse.

Your technical and commercial experience, and liaison with multi-disciplinary teams will be vital to the success of the projects you work on

Job Responsibilities
  • Prepare designs and analyses for maritime and associated structures, from initial concepts through to detailed designs.
  • Collect and collate design data.
  • Carry out inspections and surveys.
  • Produce design calculations, check and review calculations produced by others.
  • Produce sketch drawings and details for CAD and Revit drafting by others and check and review these prior to issue.
  • Prepare draft Bills of Quantities, Contract Documents and Specifications.
  • Prepare reports and presentations.
  • Undertake structural analyses and reporting, using hand calculations, excel, and finite element software.
  • Provide engineering judgment and advice; contribute to preparation of study reports.
  • Commercial and technical management of projects within the office, ensuring projects show a profitable result and are completed to an agreed programme. You’ll also contribute to the development of the client base of our UK maritime team through the production of proposals.
Required Skills And Experience
  • Analytical ability to undertake design and analysis work with support from senior engineers for complex tasks.
  • Communication skills, clearly articulating orally and in writing the reasons behind your decisions.
  • Client orientation, understanding the importance of the client’s perception of the organisation. Maintaining a professional client facing approach.
  • Conceptual ability, capable of undertaking design from concept to ready for construction.
  • Problem solving, thinking laterally and developing solutions to problems with others and on your own.
  • Relationship building, building a network within the immediate team, and the wider organisation.
  • Solution orientation delivering the project objective without losing focus in the detail.
  • Organised, disciplined, structured and consistent in the way you work.
  • Personable - approachable, relatable, and empathetic.
  • Civil or Structural Engineering Degree (or equivalent experience) and/or Project Management experience with a technical background.
  • Background in Maritime structures would be desirable but not essential.
