Job summary

Haskoning is expanding its Lerwick team in Shetland, seeking a Civil Engineer / Project Manager to lead maritime civil engineering design for ports and shipyards. You will contribute from inception through construction, coordinating with multi-disciplinary teams across the UK and internationally.

The role requires a Civil/Structural Engineering degree or equivalent, with strong design, analysis, and client-facing skills. Flexible working models and career development opportunities are offered.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare designs and analyses for maritime structures from concept to detail.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams and clients.
  • Produce design calculations and check others' work.
  • Create sketches and CAD/REVIT details for issue.
  • Draft Bills of Quantities, contracts, and specs.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations.
  • Conduct structural analyses using hand calculations, Excel, and FE software.
  • Provide engineering judgment and advice on study reports.
  • Manage projects for profitability and schedule adherence.
  • Support business development and proposals for UK maritime team.

About Our Lerwick Team:

Arch Henderson, established in 1919, have recently merged with Haskoning and have integrated into the Water & Maritime Business Unit of Haskoning to create a Maritime Arch Henderson Advisory Group with offices in Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow, Lerwick and Thurso. It is an exciting time in our history as we look to take advantage of the synergies between these two organisations, both with excellent reputations.

The Lerwick team comprises expert Maritime, Civil and Structural Engineers, Project Managers and Engineering Technicians delivering a wide range of maritime and other related projects across the Northern Isles. You would be joining a well-established team that is looking to develop as we embark on this next chapter.

The Role:

The role will require you to use your technical and practical experience to develop engineering design solutions for maritime civil engineering structures in ports and shipyards, using steel, concrete, timber, and other materials to relevant design codes.

You will have engineering input in all project stages from inception, through design and construction, to demolition, recycling, and reuse.

Your technical and commercial experience, and liaison with multi-disciplinary teams will be vital to the success of the projects you work on

Job Responsibilities:
  • Prepare designs and analyses for maritime and associated structures, from initial concepts through to detailed designs.
  • Collect and collate design data.
  • Carry out inspections and surveys.
  • Produce design calculations, check and review calculations produced by others.
  • Produce sketch drawings and details for CAD and Revit drafting by others and check and review these prior to issue.
  • Prepare draft Bills of Quantities, Contract Documents and Specifications.
  • Prepare reports and presentations.
  • Undertake structural analyses and reporting, using hand calculations, excel, and finite element software.
  • Provide engineering judgment and advice; contribute to preparation of study reports.
  • Commercial and technical management of projects within the office, ensuring projects show a profitable result and are completed to an agreed programme. You’ll also contribute to the development of the client base of our UK maritime team through the production of proposals.
Required Skills and Experience:
  • Analytical ability to undertake design and analysis work with support from senior engineers for complex tasks.
  • Communication skills, clearly articulating orally and in writing the reasons behind your decisions.
  • Client orientation, understanding the importance of the client’s perception of the organisation. Maintaining a professional client facing approach.
  • Conceptual ability, capable of undertaking design from concept to ready for construction.
  • Problem solving, thinking laterally and developing solutions to problems with others and on your own.
  • Relationship building, building a network within the immediate team, and the wider organisation.
  • Solution orientation delivering the project objective without losing focus in the detail.
  • Organised, disciplined, structured and consistent in the way you work.
  • Personable - approachable, relatable, and empathetic.
  • Civil or Structural Engineering Degree (or equivalent experience) and/or Project Management experience with a technical background.
  • Background in Maritime structures would be desirable but not essential.
