Civil Engineer (Highways & Drainage)

Gateshead

A privately owned consultancy in the North East is seeking a Civil Engineer to take technical control of the civil engineering aspects of small, medium and large projects, reporting to the Directors. The practice delivers the full project lifecycle—from feasibility and appraisal through planning, detailed design, construction and operation—across residential, commercial/retail, industrial, student accommodation, sport and leisure, education and heritage sectors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Take technical control of civil engineering aspects of projects.
  • Manage multiple projects concurrently, producing drawings and construction details in AutoCAD.
  • Supervise technicians through the design process and support the administration of projects.
  • liaise with architects, clients and other professionals; contribute to robust solutions to design challenges.
  • Ensure designs meet required standards under the company's Quality Management System.
  • Attend internal and external design reviews; undertake site visits to monitor progress against specification, reporting issues to contractors, clients and project managers as necessary.
  • Deliver residential designs to Local Authority and Water Authority standards; produce adoptable roads and sewer designs to Sections 38, 104 and 278; prepare private levels and drainage designs for residential, commercial and industrial developments.
  • Prepare engineering support for planning applications, including Flood Risk Assessments, utility assessments and site viability reports.
Qualifications
  • Relevant degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Proven experience in a consultancy environment.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD; capability with civil engineering design packages such as Site 3D, MicroDrainage and/or Causeway Flow.
  • Strong understanding of road geometry, levels and drainage design; working knowledge of approval processes for Highways (Sections 38 and 278) and Water Authority (Section 104) agreements.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to build client relationships; commitment to mentoring less experienced staff.
