Job summary

Mott MacDonald is seeking a Civil Engineer with a strong background in hydraulic analysis and design to join our Water Consultancy team in the UK. About the division

The Water Consultancy Division is Mott MacDonald's centre of excellence for responding to water and wastewater challenges, offering fantastic opportunities to get involved in diverse and technically challenging work. The work we do is at the forefront of ensuring safe water supplies for future generations and protecting our environment. Our multi-disciplinary teams provide a variety of services throughout the full project life cycle, from advisory services and feasibility studies, through outline and detailed design, to construction support and site supervision.

Overview of the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Civil Engineer with a strong technical background in hydraulic analysis and design to join our growing Water Consultancy team. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual to work on a diverse portfolio of technically challenging projects across the UK and internationally. You will contribute to the delivery of a wide range of water infrastructure projects, including transmission pipelines, surge analysis, water and wastewater treatment works, pumping stations, service reservoirs, clean water networks, and stormwater storage tunnels. The role offers the opportunity to develop a holistic understanding of water projects and work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including process, mechanical, structural, geotechnical and environmental specialists, to deliver innovative and sustainable solutions.

Key responsibilities and duties include:
  • Delivering hydraulic analysis and design for a range of clean water and wastewater projects
  • Undertaking engineering calculations and developing technical specifications, drawings and reports
  • Collaborating with clients, stakeholders and project teams to support the successful delivery of projects
  • Identifying and communicating technical, programme, quality and cost risks, together with potential mitigation measures
  • Working effectively across multiple disciplines to develop integrated engineering solutions
  • Contributing to technical excellence, innovation and continuous improvement within the team
  • Taking ownership of your professional development and actively engaging with industry best practice
Candidate specification

We are looking for an enthusiastic and technically capable engineer who can demonstrate:

  • Experience in pressurised and open-channel hydraulics applied to civil and environmental engineering projects
  • Experience undertaking hydraulic calculations and design for water and wastewater treatment facilities
  • Experience in the hydraulic design of pressurised and gravity pipeline systems
  • Experience working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including structural, geotechnical, process, electrical and mechanical engineers
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly to colleagues, clients and other stakeholders
  • An understanding of designers' responsibilities under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM)
  • A proactive approach to problem solving and a willingness to develop technical expertise across a broad range of water-sector projects
Desirable
  • Experience using hydraulic profile design software
  • Experience in transmission pipeline design, including route selection, pipe material selection, hydraulic design, steel pipe wall thickness design and thrust restraint solutions
  • Experience undertaking surge analysis
  • Experience in clean water network modelling
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution (e.g. ICE or CIWEM) and progression towards Chartered Engineer status
