Job summary

Trant Engineering is seeking a Civil Design Engineer to join IDS and contribute to the design of high‑impact civil solutions for UK water and infrastructure projects. You’ll work with a multidisciplinary team and be supported in progressing professional membership.

The role involves Civil detail design, client liaison, site surveys and alignment to Eurocodes and industry standards, with a pathway to chartership and hybrid working options.

Qualifications

  • Higher Education (NVQ+) required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related discipline (Master’s preferred).
  • Membership of a Professional Engineering Institution desirable.
  • CSCS Card or SHEA Water Qualification desirable.
  • EUSR Water Hygiene Qualification desirable.
  • Site experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret client requirements and project scope.
  • Attend client sites for condition surveys and site validation.
  • Develop civil detail design deliverables to Eurocodes and Client specs.
  • Produce design sketches/drawings using AutoCAD (AEC collection).
  • Coordinate multi-disciplinary interfaces for unified designs.
  • Ensure compliance with OH&S, ISO and safety standards.

With over 1,000 employees and a £150m turnover and due to continued success and new Framework awards, we are looking to strengthen our Engineering Team with the appointment of a Civil Design Engineer.

IDS, Trant’s internal design team, are involved in all phases of the project lifecycle from feasibility studies through to detailed design and construction support and are instrumental in providing technical support across the business as a whole.

The Role

This role is suited to an enthusiastic engineer who has worked for a short period within the industry, either in a site based or office role, who wants to develop their technical design knowledge. You will be supported by our experienced design team and encouraged and supported in getting professional membership of the ICE.

What You’ll Be Doing
1) GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS
  • Report to the Head of Discipline – Civils, as part of a multi-discipline d team of engineers working primarily on Trant’s UK Water Industry Frameworks.
  • Manage multi-discipline design interfaces and integration of the Civil design elements to deliver fit-for-purpose engineering solutions.
  • Assist with tasks on a major project or lead projects of moderate scope.
2) TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Interpret, understand & challenge project requirements from Client documents (project scope of work, drawings, specifications, correspondence, etc.).
  • Attend Client sites as required to undertake condition surveys of existing processes, structures and assets, and promoting further opportunities to enhance Client relationships.
  • The development of the following Civil detail design deliverables to facilitate the delivery of the project to Eurocodes and industry/Client specifications:
    • Survey specifications/datasheets (E.g. Topographical, Ground Penetrating Radar, Structural, Ground Investigation etc.).
    • Design calculations (E.g. Concrete, steel, hydraulic, foundation, temporary works, etc.).
    • Design sketches/drawings using the AutoCAD AEC software collection (E.g. Slabs, structures, buried assets, chambers, access pavements, site layouts etc.).
    • Design schedules, buildability statements, design risk assessment, reports, etc.).
  • A comprehensive understanding of other discipline requirements and interactions required to deliver a unified and complete design solution.
  • Compliance with OHSA and regulations, ISO and the ability to interpret and take onboard other international safety standards.
  • Maintain a knowledge base and keep up to date with new methods, products and developments affecting the civil and water engineering disciplines and recommend new practices or changes in application.
3) SCHEDULE, PROJECT & TASK MANAGEMENT
  • Collaborate closely with internal teams, clients, external design partners and subcontractors to develop and deliver innovative, compliant solutions.
  • Proactively drive a H&S focus throughout the design process and subsequent delivery phase, instigating development of design risk assessments to address risks identified during review activities.
  • Identify and escape all instances of design change throughout the project lifecycle.
4) MANAGEMENT, SUPERVISION & GUIDANCE
  • Provide technical support and guidance to site teams during installation/commissioning.
  • Develop & review project documentation for compliance with relevant Client & UK water industry standards, regulations and Company QA processes.
  • Manage the project specific design interfaces with Clients, external consultants, subcontractors and suppliers.
5) COMMUNICATION, TEAMWORK & LEADERSHIP
  • Enthusiastically embrace technical excellence and innovation within the team, contributing to the development of new design methodologies and tools.
  • Present engineering solutions to complex problems in a client/stakeholder facing environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with a high level of computer literacy.
  • Mentor, and develop junior team members, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.

What We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate will have a background in Civil Engineering and will be joining our multidisciplined Innovation, Design & Solutions (IDS) department working on the design of projects covering, but not limited to the following:

  • Water treatment
  • Water distribution and storage
  • Wastewater recycling
  • Flood Defence
Essential
  • Higher Education (NVQ+).
Desirable
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related discipline (Master’s preferred).
  • Membership of a Professional Engineering Institution.
  • CSCS Card or SHEA Water Qualification.
  • EUSR Water Hygiene Qualification.
  • Work within a water based environment would be useful, but not essential.
  • Experience on site, in a Site Engineer or similar role, would be beneficial.
Experience
  • At least 2 years of relevant engineering experience, including project design and coordination.
  • Broad knowledge of industry standards, legislation and engineering principles.
