Job summary

Sweco UK Ltd in Ipswich, with offices in London and Solent, is seeking an experienced Civil Infrastructure Design Engineer. You will deliver drainage and highway schemes and coordinate designs with utilities and other disciplines.

You will use AutoCAD, Civil 3D and related tools to produce designs, calculations and documentation, contributing to projects from feasibility through planning approvals, while following standards including DMRB/MCHW and DCG.

Qualifications

  • Experience in drainage, earthworks and highways design.
  • Proficiency in flood risk management principles.
  • Knowledge of environmental and sustainability standards and DCG guidance.
  • Familiarity with DMRB/MCHW and Building Regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Design and detail civil infrastructure schemes for highways, residential, commercial and infrastructure developments.
  • Perform hydraulic and hydrological calculations and prepare calculation packages.
  • Prepare reports, drawings and documentation for planning submissions and construction.
  • Coordinate with utilities and multidisciplinary teams; manage project portals and ISMS awareness.

We are currently looking for a talented and ambitious Civil Infrastructure Design Engineer to join our team. The role could be based in either our Ipswich, London or Solent offices.

What does the role involve?

As an experienced Infrastructure Engineer you will deliver drainage and highway schemes associated with building projects and coordinate designs with utilities and other disciplines.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Design - Developing the design and implementation of drainage and infrastructure solutions for a variety of projects, including highways, residential, commercial and infrastructure developments, including Critical National Infrastructure (e.g. data centres). Undertaking the design and detailing of civil engineering schemes, feasibility studies, inspections, surveys and reports.
  • Calculations - Performing detailed hydraulic and hydrological calculations, cut and fill analysis and highway design using specialised software, as well as collating calculation packages suitable for submission to external parties.
  • Project Documentation - Managing project portals and common data environments. Learning and adhering to the standard ISO27001 information security management systems (ISMS). Preparing reports, presentation documents and technical drawings suitable for planning applications and construction. Supporting the production of construction layouts, details, specifications and technical submissions including highway and water authority section agreements (S278, S38, S104, S185 etc).
  • Coordination & Collaboration – Developing highway, infrastructure, and drainage designs and identify clashes with utilities. Communicating effectively with the project team. Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, participating in client meetings and presentations to convey design concepts and findings.
To be successful in this role you’ll possess:

A good understanding of flood risk management principles along with experience in the design of infrastructure projects including drainage, earthworks and highways. You’ll be proficient in software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Auto Tracking, InfoDrainage or similar. You should also have experience with environmental and sustainability standards, sewerage sector guidance (DCG), SUDS standards, local and national Highway standards including DMRB/MCHW, Building Regulations and good practice.

Experience in producing / collating Flood Risk Assessments (Flood Risk Zones 1 & 2) would be highly beneficial, and whilst not essential experience in Mission Critical would be an advantage.

You’ll have a bachelor’s degree (preferably a Masters), HNC/HND in Civil Engineering. Equivalent experience may also be considered.

As an experienced design engineer, you will be looking to further develop your career with a desire to take on increasing responsibility for both technical delivery and project management.
