Job summary

AECOM's Aviation Infrastructure team in Birmingham is seeking civil engineers to shape the future of airports. You’ll design runways, taxiways, aprons, drainage and airfield systems, applying strong fundamentals and working with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high‑quality solutions.

We welcome engineers with experience in aviation, highways, rail or other major infrastructure, offering mentoring, development plans and clear progression.

Qualifications

• Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
• Aviation experience is welcome but not required.
• Interest in developing a career in aviation infrastructure.
• Enjoys solving complex engineering challenges and working in multidisciplinary teams.
• Knowledge of DMRB or highway civil engineering design.

Responsibilities

• Design airport infrastructure including runways, taxiways, aprons, service roads, drainage and airfield systems.
• Produce engineering calculations, reports, drawings and technical specifications.
• Investigate site inspections and asset condition surveys to inform investment decisions.
• Organise and own assigned tasks, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality solutions.

Our Aviation Infrastructure team is based in our AECOM Basingstoke, Croydon, Manchester, Birmingham and London offices and are passionate about creating innovative, resilient, and sustainable solutions for airports of all sizes - including major commercial hubs and greenfield airports to general aviation airfields and military installations.

We welcome applications from experienced civil engineers who are looking to build a career in aviation. If you're keen to apply your engineering skills to a new and exciting sector, we'll provide the support, mentoring and development needed to help you succeed. We’re particularly interested in engineers with a strong civils design background gained within aviation, highways, rail, roads or other major infrastructure environments.

No aviation experience? No problem.

You don't need previous aviation experience to apply. We're looking for civil engineers with strong engineering fundamentals, a collaborative mindset and a desire to learn. If you've worked on highways, transportation, public realm, rail or other infrastructure projects, your experience is highly transferable, and we'll help you develop the specialist knowledge required to design runways instead of roads.

Each team member has a development plan to provide a clear pathway to personal development and career progression. The team provides technical solutions throughout the project lifecycle from masterplanning, feasibility, preliminary and detailed stage designs and construction and handover. Our clients are many and varied from both the private and public sector and include airport investors, airport operators and major contractors.

Here’s what you’ll do:

• Design: Contribute to the design of airport infrastructure including runways, taxiways, aprons, service roads, drainage, utilities and airfield systems. You'll work alongside experienced aviation engineers who will support your development in airport-specific design.
• Produce: Engineering calculations, reports, drawings and technical specifications throughout the project lifecycle.
• Investigate: Support site inspections and asset condition surveys, helping clients make informed investment decisions.
• Organise: Take ownership of assigned tasks, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high‑quality engineering solutions.
