Location: Near Bedford

Contract: Full-time, Office-based (Monday to Friday)

Excelsior Land is an innovative, family-run construction company seeking a permanent Financial Controller to join their senior management team.

Established in 2008, Excelsior Land Limited is a market-leading construction company specialising in low-carbon new builds. They are trailblazers in the industry, driving change by championing modern construction techniques that reduce the carbon footprint of every project they deliver, in line with our mission: “Think Net Zero.”

This is a strategic and influential role for a forward-thinking finance professional who wants to make a genuine impact. You will play a key part in shaping the company's financial strategy, supporting sustainable business growth during an exciting period of expansion.

About the Role

As a key member of the senior management team, you will report directly to the Managing Director. You will be responsible for leading the core finance function and in time grow the team so that you are overseeing a small, high-performing finance and accounts team. You will work closely with departmental heads to provide commercial insight and ensure financial decisions are aligned with their long-term goals. This is a hands-on, strategic role requiring strong leadership, technical expertise, and cross-functional collaboration.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead all core finance operations including transactional processing, financial controls, and reporting
  • Manage and optimise corporate reporting and monthly management accounting to the board
  • Maintain balance sheet integrity and ensure accurate accounting practices
  • Create and validate closing trial balances, including financial analysis and accounting reconciliation
  • Prepare financial forecasts (P&L), cash flow projections, and annual budgets
  • Ensure full compliance with HMRC tax filings and customs reporting
  • Handle bad debt resolution
  • Uphold segregation of duties and internal control standards
  • Build strong relationships across internal departments, advising on financial matters and contributing to wider business goals. Monitor performance, control costs, and identify opportunities
  • Analysis and input for insurance renewals
  • Suggest improvements to streamline the financial process across the business
  • Preparing business cases to support new investment, strategic and other business decisions (ROI Modelling)
  • Analyse competitor and market financial information to provide insight to assist with decision making
  • Day-to-day responsibilities include end-to-end accounting, debtor and creditor management, management of bank accounts, preparing internal payroll
About You

We are looking for a commercially astute, forward-thinking finance professional who thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. You'll be a natural problem-solver who is as comfortable “rolling up your sleeves” as you are advising the boardroom. Ideally, you will have had multiple years of experience working in a similar sized SME organisation. You are capable of getting into the detail, but you are also able to step back and look at the bigger picture.

Essential Requirements
  • CIMA qualified with a minimum 5 years' experience in a similar role
  • Advanced proficiency in Windows-based software and automated workbook processes
  • Self-disciplined, approachable, and adaptable to changing priorities
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills with internal departments, clients and subcontractors
Employee Benefits
  • Health and wellbeing package
  • Team social events
  • Pension
  • On site parking
  • Generous package and benefits
  • Up to 24 days holiday plus bank holidays
