Job Summary:

The Chronic Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing and coordinating clinically competent care for patients with End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD). Working as part of a dedicated multidisciplinary care team, the RN delivers safe, effective dialysis treatment while supporting education, leadership, and quality improvement initiatives that improve patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform ongoing assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation for assigned patients during all phases of hemodialysis treatment.
  • Document findings accurately in the patient medical record, adjusting treatment plans as necessary and notifying the physician or charge nurse.
  • Provide education to patients and families regarding disease management, dialysis procedures, and transplant options.
  • Administer prescribed medications and evaluate their effectiveness in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Direct and coordinate care delivered by Patient Care Technicians, LPNs/LVNs, and ancillary staff.
  • Participate in staff training, orientation, and ongoing education to ensure team competence and compliance.
  • Ensure proper lab collection, processing, and documentation.
  • Maintain safety, infection control, and compliance standards in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Initiate emergency response measures as necessary.
  • Support facility-wide quality initiatives and improvement programs.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership and oversight of Patient Care Technicians/LPNs/LVNs/RNs as a Team Leader or designated Nurse in Charge, after meeting the following requirements:
    • Completion of all internal RN education and training programs.
    • Minimum 9 months of RN experience.
    • Minimum 3 months of chronic or acute hemodialysis experience.
Education & Licensure:
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current Maryland RN license (or ability to obtain prior to start).
  • CPR/BLS certification required.
  • Must meet the practice requirements of the state of employment.
Experience & Required Skills:
  • At least 1 year of nephrology nursing experience within the past two years.
  • Chronic hemodialysis experience required.
  • Strong patient assessment, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities.
  • Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems and clinical documentation.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
  • Provides direct patient care involving frequent standing, lifting, and assisting patients.
  • May lift or move dialysis equipment weighing up to 200 lbs. with assistance and handle solutions up to 30 lbs. as high as 5 feet.
  • Exposure to healthcare environments with moderate noise and infectious materials.
  • May require occasional travel to other facilities or training sites.
  • Must complete Ishihara Color Blindness Test (reasonable accommodations available).
