Childrens Hospital Surgical Directorate General Manager

Be the operational lead for the Surgical Directorate of the Childrens hospital leading on performance and finance delivery, transformation and inspirational leadership

Main duties of the job
  • Hold operational responsibility for service delivery across your Directorate.
  • Lead performance, workforce, financial and quality improvement programmes.
  • Drive transformation, service redesign, and modernisation.
  • Shape waiting list recovery, patient flow, efficiency, and workforce planning.
  • Develop business cases, lead complex change projects, and support long-term strategic planning.
  • Inspire a culture of openness, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Build strong relationships with clinicians, system partners, and internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure high‑quality clinical outcomes and patient experience through collaborative leadership.

Job responsibilities

Supporting the Care Group Leadership Team and the Director of Operations, the post holder will have operational responsibility for the Directorate in the Care Group to ensure that all operational performance targets including waiting lists, finance, workforce and service improvement targets are achieved. The post holder will actively contribute to service integration and to the development of services in their Care Group, and where appropriate the wider Nottingham health and social care system.

Supporting the Care Group Director of Operations, the post holder is responsible for the operational day to day planning, monitoring and delivery of all patient services within the Directorate.

The post holder will be responsible for leading on, and delivering success across, several key programmes within the Directorate. These programmes will be essential in ensuring that the Care Group can deliver its primary objectives and targets over the years and will encompass a range of topics including productivity and efficiency, transformation, clinical effectiveness, quality and workforce succession planning.

Training & Qualifications
  • Previous successful management experience at a senior level with applicable specialist knowledge
Experience
  • Experience of leading and managing substantial service change and redesign in a complex environment
  • Experience in managing large budgets for multiple departments and or services of major area of activity; responsible for overall budget setting for major area of activity
Communication & Relationship Skills
  • Providing and receiving highly complex, highly sensitive, or highly contentious information where there are significant barriers to acceptance which need to be overcome
  • Highly developed leader with strong interpersonal and communication skills
Analytical & Judgement Skills
  • Proven track record of managing operating budgets and delivering financial balance
Planning & Organisation Skills
  • Proven track record of developing successful business plans and strategy for planning activity
  • Confident in presenting complex information to wide and varied audience both internal and external to the organisation

  • Must be able to demonstrate behaviours consistent with the Trust's "We are here for you" behavioural standards
