Job description
Overview

The Long-Term Conditions pathway, part of the Children’s Care Group within RDaSH, seek an experienced, enthusiastic and motivated Children’s Epilepsy Nurse Specialist with prescribing qualification to cover the Borough of Doncaster within a community setting. You will be part of an integrated team working alongside Children’s Specialisms (Children’s Community Nursing, Epilepsy, Special School Nursing, and TB) and will work closely with a wide MDT ensuring seamless care for children/young people with Epilepsy. The Children’s Epilepsy Nurse Specialist will work within the community providing information, support and advice about the condition from the time of diagnosis. By enabling a good understanding of the condition and through a holistic, collaborative and coordinated approach to care the specialist nurse will support children and young people and their families to reach their goals of self- management.

The role will include acting as a consultant, clinical expert and researcher and an educational resource for other professionals striving towards improved, evidence-based management of epilepsy in health, social care and educational settings. The role requires a confident independent prescriber in the field of epilepsy. You will be fully supported in your role with access to ongoing professional development, regular supervision and appraisal and the opportunity to network within the field of Epilepsy.

Responsibilities
  • To support children, young people and families to self-manage, reducing hospital admissions
  • To be the lead professional for childhood epilepsy
  • To co-ordinate the care of the patients between secondary, tertiary, general practice and community care
  • To improve the quality of life and health outcomes for patients and their families
  • To provide an epilepsy service that will ensure that patients living with epilepsy receive appropriate management, in line with current and any future NICE guidance
  • To support the continuity of care between community, multi-agency services and to ensure seamless care between specialised and non-specialised services
  • The post holder will act as the first point of contact for children, young people and their families and for other professionals in Doncaster and will offer support and advice with the aim of minimising seizures and maximising patient and carers opportunity to live life as they wish
  • The specialist nurse will fulfil the role of care coordinator and a single point of contact for the child and family
Qualifications and requirements
  • Experience as a Children’s Epilepsy Nurse Specialist with prescribing qualification
  • Confident independent prescriber in epilepsy
  • Ability to work in a community setting and in partnership with a range of professionals
  • Strong communication and educational skills to support families and professionals
