The Pirbright Institute in Surrey seeks an internationally recognised scientist to become Head of Science Strategy, a dual role combining a world-class research programme with senior strategic leadership.

You will act as Deputy to the Director of Research, shaping Pirbright's science strategy, securing funding, mentoring staff, and representing the Institute to global stakeholders. This professorial-equivalent post offers permanent leadership with substantial influence on policy and direction.

Qualifications

• PhD in a relevant field with substantial experience as an independent research leader.
• Proven ability to build and sustain a high-impact research group.
• Strong track record in securing and managing competitive external funding.
• International reputation for scientific excellence through publications, talks and awards.
• Demonstrated strategic and financial acumen balancing ambition with institutional priorities.
• Excellent communication and collaboration with senior stakeholders.
• Proven leadership of diverse teams across career stages.

Responsibilities

• Act as Deputy to the Director of Research and help shape Pirbright's science strategy.
• Lead on strategic initiatives and governance, including oversight of Science Technology Platforms.
• Line-manage group leaders, fellows, and STP leads; foster an inclusive, high-impact research culture.
• Build and lead a high-performing research group in relevant areas (virology, immunology, zoonoses, etc.).
• Secure significant external funding through competitive applications and partnerships.
• Represent Pirbright externally to strategic stakeholders at national and international levels.
• Ensure the highest standards of health, safety, biosafety, and research integrity.
