Chief Pharmacist

The closing date is 17 December 2025

As delegated by the Chief Executive to hold corporate responsibility for medicines management.

To ensure the Trust board of directors receive timely and appropriate assurance in relation to medicines management.

To be directly accountable to the Chief Medical Officer for the Trust wide pharmacy and medicines management services.

To maintain the Trusts pharmacy and medicines management services in line with nationally agreed standards, including - but not limited to - the Care Quality Commission and the NHS Litigation Authority.

To be the RDASH Accountable officer (controlled drugs).

To maintain close working relationships with business divisions in order to support the development of their medicines management processes.

Main duties of the job

To provide strategic leadership and direction for pharmacy and medicines management throughout the Trust.

To ensure the systems and processes of medicines management meet the governance requirements of the Trust.

To maintain management and financial control on the Trust pharmacy and medicines related services.

To work collaboratively across the local health communities and relevant partners to ensure safe and cost effective use of medicines.

To ensure that governance arrangements in relation to medicines management protect patients from medicines related harm.

To ensure the reporting systems associated with pharmacy and medicines management are fit for purpose and provide the appropriate level of assurance in relation to pharmacy and medicines management.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • MPharm (or equivalent).
  • GPhC registration.
  • Postgraduate Clinical Qualification or relevant experience.
  • Postgraduate Management Qualification or relevant experience.
  • Evidence of CPD to GPhC standards.
  • Any other relevant Post Graduate training.
  • Higher academic qualifications - research or clinical in relation to medicines.
  • Higher qualifications in management, e.g. MBA
Experience
  • Evidence of sound post registration professional practice.
  • Evidence of advanced practice skills and able to demonstrate the impact of this on practice change/development.
  • Evidence of promoting/supporting active user/carer involvement/participation.
  • Be able to effectively chair meetings.
  • Highly developed clinical skills.
  • Sound knowledge of clinical / risk assessment and understanding of confidentiality.
  • Substantial post registration experience including secondary care pharmacy.
  • Management of Change in the NHS.
  • Performance Management and development of staff.
  • Strategic / Business Planning and project management.
  • Sound knowledge of the Mental Health Act and Care Programme Approach.
