Job description

The Eastern Pathology Alliance is formed from three Pathology Laboratories based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH), the James Paget University Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kings Lynn. The Laboratory at NNUH provides a large range of Blood Sciences services comprising Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology and Transfusion, Immunology and Toxicology.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Blood Sciences manager, NNUH immunology clinical lead and be line manager to the immunology technical BMS staff, Demonstrable experience of managing staff and pathology services is essential.

Main duties of the job

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist who has extensive experience working in immunology and managing staff to oversee the management and operation of our immunology laboratory at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. This role is based at the NNUH hub site and will be the service lead and subject matter expert for all aspects of the immunology laboratory service.

Job responsibilities
  • Communicates, understands and interprets complex and sensitive test information to managers, consultants, nurses, other health care colleagues, patients and patient carers.
  • Answers all complex telephone inquiries from pathology users, patients and patient carers about test results and provide information as lead expert.
  • At highest level of specialist knowledge explains anomalies to pathology users when results do not agree with clinical presentation by exercising tact and persuasive skills. Responsible for solving the problem and writing policies to lower the risk factors.
  • Accountable for service delivery including emergency, on call training, for urgent and routine work and specialised work achieving stated turnaround times in line with Trust and Service policies.
  • Responsible for complex specialist analytical equipment on a daily basis and authorises fitness for clinical use.
  • Responsible for the efficient use of expensive tests and high value analysers.
  • Responsible for planning rotas to run test procedures on a range of specialist methodologies on a daily basis to include calibration and quality control testing.
  • Responsible for fault finding on specialist analysers after formal training from the manufacturers.
  • Deliver formal training on specialist analysers to staff in their service.
  • Responsible for developing, writing, authorising and implementing policies in their specialist area.
  • Propose and implement changes that will improve and develop the service for external clinical users.
