Job description
Position Overview

The Carpentry Technician Tutor will deliver high‑quality practical training, technical support, and workshop supervision for learners studying carpentry and joinery. The role combines hands‑on technical expertise with the ability to instruct, demonstrate skills, and support learners in developing industry‑standard competencies. As a Carpentry Technician you will ensure that workshops are safe, well‑maintained, and effectively resourced to support teaching, learning, and assessment.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare, organise, and lay out equipment and materials needed for practical sessions, ensuring everything is cleared and stored correctly afterward.
  • Demonstrate the use of tools, equipment, and practical activities to students and staff, responding to questions and supporting understanding.
  • Provide technical guidance and hands‑on assistance during lessons, using your expertise to enhance teaching, learning, and assessment.
  • Assemble, adapt, or demonstrate equipment for staff and learners as directed, including delivering practical demonstrations.
  • Carry out routine maintenance and repairs on equipment, and liaise with external contractors when specialist work is required.
  • Arrange for equipment to be sent off‑site for repair when necessary.
  • Install, test, and service equipment regularly to ensure it remains safe, functional, and ready for use.
  • Order materials and supplies as needed, advising on the purchase of new equipment and keeping procurement records in line with College requirements.
  • Source relevant materials, resources, and articles requested by teaching staff for lesson delivery.
  • Support the planning and running of open events, including open days and open evenings.
  • Maintain workshops and classrooms to an exemplary standard, reflecting the College's expectations for high‑quality teaching and learning environments.
  • Take responsibility for ensuring that all required safety checks, documentation, and Health & Safety procedures are fully in place and up to date.
  • Keep current with Health & Safety legislation, industry standards, and best practice, sharing updates where appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate inventories of equipment, supplies, and other records as directed by the Curriculum Manager.
  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff to plan equipment needs and organise timetables, contributing effectively as part of the team.
  • Produce risk assessments where required and promote strong health and safety practices.
  • Ensure COSHH substances are handled, stored, and disposed of safely, following all regulations.
  • Carry out routine inspections of the radiation store.
  • Assist in setting up demonstrations when requested by teaching staff.
  • Build and maintain external partnerships, when directed, that help enhance and support the curriculum offer.
General Responsibilities
  • Maintain a strong focus on health and safety across all areas of responsibility.
  • Ensure safeguarding, equality, and health and safety expectations are embedded in everyday practice.
  • Uphold a thorough understanding of safeguarding and child protection, particularly as it relates to vulnerable learners.
  • Follow all Trust policies and procedures related to Safeguarding and Child Protection.
  • Engage in ongoing training and professional development.
  • Comply with all Trust policies, procedures, and expectations.
  • Actively support the promotion of British values as outlined in the Prevent Duty.
  • Undertake any additional duties reasonably assigned by the Trust Management Team and appropriate to the role.
