Job summary

Matthew Arnold School in Oxford is seeking a proactive Caretaker to support the Site Team. You will manage security, maintenance and health and safety, ensuring the school remains safe and well-presented throughout the year.

Reporting to the Site Supervisor and Assistant Business Manager, you will supervise contractors, assist with deliveries, and help create a welcoming environment for students and staff. DBS check is required.

Responsibilities

• Maintain site security, opening/closing buildings and alarm response.
• Carry out general maintenance, repairs and minor improvements.
• Inspect buildings, equipment and grounds for issues.
• Keep site clean, safe and well-presented including waste and grounds.
• Support health and safety compliance and record-keeping.
• Assist with deliveries, room setups, furniture moves, day-to-day operations.
• Liaise with contractors to ensure safe, quality work.
• Contribute to a safe, welcoming school environment.

Hours: 37 hours per week, 52 weeks per year

The Role

Matthew Arnold School is seeking a proactive and reliable Caretaker to join our Site Team. Working under the direction of the Site Supervisor and Assistant Business Manager, you will support the day-to-day operation of the school site, including security, maintenance, repairs, health and safety compliance, contractor supervision and general site upkeep. You will help ensure our facilities remain safe, secure and well-maintained throughout the year.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintain site security, including opening and closing buildings, security checks and alarm response.
• Carry out general maintenance, repairs and minor improvement works across the school.
• Inspect buildings, equipment and grounds, identifying and addressing maintenance and safety issues.
• Keep the site clean, safe and well-presented through cleaning, waste management, grounds maintenance and winter gritting.
• Support health and safety compliance, including fire safety procedures, equipment checks and record keeping.
• Assist with deliveries, room setups, furniture moves and day-to-day site operations.
• Liaise with and monitor contractors, ensuring work is completed safely and to the required standard.
• Contribute to a safe, welcoming and efficient environment for students, staff, visitors and the wider school community.

Requirements

• Practical maintenance, caretaking or site management experience.
• Good DIY skills and a basic understanding of building maintenance.
• Strong awareness of health and safety requirements.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Organised, proactive and able to prioritise workloads.
• Good communication skills and a commitment to high standards of service.
