Job Summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Events Manager to join our Care Team at Shooting Star Childrens Hospices. Shooting Star Childrens Hospices provides specialist care and support to families who have a baby, child or young person with a life‑limiting condition, or whose child has died. Rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission, we support families across Surrey, north‑west London and south‑west London from diagnosis to end of life and throughout bereavement with a range of nursing, practical, emotional and medical care.

Our Care Events Team delivers an extensive programme of groups and events for the 800 life‑limiting children, their families and bereaved families. These include themed family events, social groups for siblings, pamper days for mums, counselling groups, a bereavement café, memorial days and festive events such as ice skating at Hampton Court. Each week we run 5 to 6 events, offering families valuable opportunities to create memories together.

About Us

We provide specialist, free of charge care and support 24/7, including nursing, symptom management, respite stays, end‑of‑life care, and a comprehensive range of therapies, groups and clinics for the whole family. Our dedicated staff’s commitment and professionalism enable every family to make every moment count.

Funding is largely sourced from supporters, with just 30% from government. We employ 175 staff, including 98 nursing and medical professionals, and support around 700 families.

Job Description

The Care Events Manager is responsible for the delivery and oversight of the Care Events Programme for life‑limiting children, their families and bereaved relatives. Working closely with allied health professionals, family support workers, and volunteers, the Manager leads a diverse team to design, plan, and execute wellness events, support groups, therapy groups, and daily experiences at Christchurch.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing and implementing an annual programme of family wellness events, support groups and therapy groups that delivers excellent care and support.
  • Understanding the evolving needs of children, young people and families through collaboration with care services and ongoing learning.
  • Managing the Care Events Team and coordinating event teams across both hospices and community venues.
  • Leading line management and development of a large group of Care Events Volunteers.
  • Attending weekly Psychosocial Leads Clinic and setting annual objectives focused on safe psychosocial care.
  • Co‑ordinating a daily experiences schedule at Christophers alongside allied healthcare professionals.
  • Ensuring Care Events attendance at MDTs and key meetings, and managing individual referrals.
  • Planning and delivering wishes requested by children with life‑limiting conditions.
  • Collaborating with care, fundraising and corporate teams to enhance care provision and uphold values.
  • Ensuring accessibility and impact of group and event participation for all families.
  • Governance: Reviewing policies, processes and completing audits to meet the highest quality standards.
  • Producing an annual report including stakeholder input, learning, plans and aspirations.
Person Specification
Qualifications

Essential: English and maths GCSE or equivalent (graded A‑C).

Desirable: Events management qualification, leadership/management training, degree level qualification, Minibus MIDAS training, play specialist qualification.

Experience

Essential: Experience of professional events management; proven track record of planning, organising and executing high‑profile events; marketing and events administration; line managing a team; working effectively with diverse backgrounds; fast‑paced multi‑stream environment.

Desirable: Experience working with vulnerable individuals/families, children with disabilities, healthcare or palliative care settings, project planning, and with children and young people.

Essential Experience (Repeated – retained once for clarity)
  • Experience of professional events management
  • Proven track record of planning, organising, and executing high‑profile events (e.g., conferences, corporate meetings, galas, trade shows, festivals, or community events).
  • Professional experience of marketing and events administration, with evidence of successful engagement in bespoke events.
