Job summary

AmcoGiffen’s in-house Civil & Structural Design team in York is seeking a CAD Technician to support engineers in producing high-quality drawings for permanent works across rail infrastructure projects.

You will work closely with designers to develop concepts through to detailed design, contribute to BIM delivery where required, and benefit from ongoing training and clear career progression within a safety‑focused, collaborative environment.

Qualifications

  • HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience producing engineering drawings within a civil engineering, infrastructure or construction environment.
  • Knowledge of CAD software and engineering drawing standards.
  • Understanding of civil engineering and infrastructure design principles.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate technical information.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to manage workload effectively and work across multiple projects.

Responsibilities

  • Produce and develop engineering drawings and technical details in accordance with company and industry CAD standards.
  • Support the delivery of permanent works designs across rail infrastructure and accessibility projects.
  • Assist in the development of infrastructure designs from concept through to detailed design.
  • Interpret engineering information and accurately translate design requirements into technical drawings.
  • Challenge project briefs where appropriate and contribute ideas that support innovative and practical engineering solutions.
  • Assist with site inspections, surveys and data collection activities to inform design development.
  • Ensure drawings and technical outputs are accurate, coordinated and compliant with relevant standards and specifications.
  • Support the management of design documentation, revisions and technical records.
  • Work collaboratively with engineers, technicians and project delivery teams to ensure efficient project delivery.
  • Contribute to Designer's Risk Assessments and support Safe by Design principles.
  • Support BIM‑led project delivery where required.
  • Assist with the ongoing development of efficient CAD processes, tools and best practices.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a CAD Technician to join our expanding in‑house Civil & Structural Design team based in York. As we continue to invest in our design capability, we are developing a dedicated Permanent Works Infrastructure Design team to support a growing portfolio of rail infrastructure projects nationwide. This role will play a key part in delivering high-quality engineering drawings and technical support across a wide range of infrastructure schemes, including Access for All (AfA) projects, Electrification and Power (E&P) schemes, Project Reach programmes, lineside civils works and station infrastructure enhancements. Based on the existing York design team role profile and updated business requirements. About The Team

Our in‑house Design & Engineering team delivers multidisciplinary civil and structural engineering solutions across a wide range of railway infrastructure projects. Working closely with major framework clients and project delivery teams, we support projects from feasibility and concept development through to detailed design and construction support. As our infrastructure portfolio continues to grow, we are expanding the York team to support increasing demand across accessibility, enhancement and infrastructure renewal programmes.

Typical projects include:

  • Access for All (AfA) schemes
  • Station upgrades and platform works
  • Electrification and Power (E&P) infrastructure schemes
  • Project Reach and rail enhancement programmes
  • Lineside civils and access improvements
  • Bridges, retaining structures and drainage improvements
  • Footbridges, ramps and station accessibility infrastructure
  • Civil engineering works associated with multidisciplinary rail projects
The Role

As a CAD Technician, you will support engineers and designers in the production of high-quality engineering drawings, models and technical documentation for permanent works infrastructure projects. You'll work closely with engineers and project teams to develop innovative and practical design solutions, ensuring all outputs meet relevant standards, quality requirements and client expectations. This role offers excellent exposure to a broad range of rail infrastructure projects and provides a strong platform for developing both technical and professional skills.

Key Responsibilities

Essential Requirements
  • HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience producing engineering drawings within a civil engineering, infrastructure or construction environment.
  • Knowledge of CAD software and engineering drawing standards.
  • Understanding of civil engineering and infrastructure design principles.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate technical information.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to manage workload effectively and work across multiple projects.
Desirable
  • Experience working within the rail sector.
  • Exposure to bridges, stations, property assets, lineside civils or accessibility projects.
  • Understanding of BIM principles and digital design delivery.
  • CSCS Professionally Qualified Person card or equivalent.
  • Sentinel PTS certification.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Working towards EngTech accreditation with a relevant professional institution.
